Question re: using points at other than home resort

My husband and I are only a few days from making a final decision on whether to buy a DVC or not.

If we buy 200 points at, say, WLV or HH, does that mean I have to use more points at OKW? I know that question is confusing, so let me break it down:

I know that OKW is sold out, but available through resale. Although we haven't entirely ruled out a resale, there seem to be some advantages by buying through Disney. With that in mind, we are thinking about buying 200 points at one of the available resorts. So....hypothetically, if it takes 200 points to rent a studio at OKW for someone who's actually an OWNER at OKW, will it cost me more points to rent the same amount of time if I'm an owner at another resort (ie similar to a penalty for renting at a resort other than your home resort).

I"m aware that the window of opportunity for making your reservations in much smaller when using a resort other than your home resort, but I don't really think that's a huge issue (maybe I'm wrong in thinking that).

Basically, we're trying to gather as much info as possible before plunking down the $$ for this investment, so I'd appreciate all opinions.

Also....are there any tax advantages of owning DVC?

THANKS

Hi,
The point chart works for all DVC owners. There is no more points for someone who owns at BCV booking at BWV. You
should be more concerned on where you want your home base is for the 11 month booking window. But if you don't make plans that far in advance, then anywhere with the 7 month window should do you fine.

DVC is well worth the $$ if you plan on coming to a DVC property every 1-3 years. We come every year!

If you finance your DVC, you will get to deduct the interest as a realestate tax. But I only know this through Disney purchase. I don't know how it works through re-sale.

points are points - does not matter where you buy - you can use them at any and all DVC resorts - for the same points as an owner at that DVC resort. which dizzy has explained very well

the thing you really need to look for it the maintence fees - VB has the highest - I am not sure where HH is. You want low maintence fees (this is what you will be paying until 2042 every year). OKW has the lowest maintence fees.

I don't think they are currently selling VWL (I could be wrong) the only WDW resort currently being sold is BCV.

The major pitch for is BCV - if you ask there are points at VWL - I believe VB points are for sale as well

thanks
Jaysue

No, it does not cost you more points. You pay the same as a member of OKW, but you can not get a reservation there at the 11 month window, you have to wait for 7 months then get your reservations. I would strongly recommend that you buy your points at the resort you want to stay at OR at the very least buy at WDW DVC if you plan on going to WDW. To buy at HH with the idea of switching to a WDW DVC can be a risk especially at busy times of the year. :D

Is preference given to home resort owners at the 7-month window . . . or on the wait-list for your home resort?

the wait list is surpose to get preference - however there have been times when calling gets bettter results.

no one members get preference over another member - everyone at the 7 month time is treat equally by MS unless you are already on the wait list.

most of the time - this is a nonissue - more reservations can be made at the time of booking -

unless you are like me and sometimes likes to make last minute reservations

I make the earlier part of this month (well last week) reservations for my brother to have 2 studios in July for their baseball game.

so you can make last minute reservations - just don't try to be choose about where you want to stay.

the only time I have ever heard of someone not getting what they wanted from the wait-list was the first two weeks of December - it is very popular and you really need the home resort to be at WDW if you want to go then - later during Christmas you won't find a problem - but those first two weeks will be popular for a while anyway! Or you can buy at HH or VB then do an add on of 60 points at BCV or VWL - so that you can have the 11 month time for your December reservations (that is enough for a Sun-thur stay in a studio at either place)
