What does it mean when points are "in holding"?

"holding points" are created if you cancel a reservation within 30 days of arrival. These points are than restrictive in booking status, they can only be used for ressies within 60 days at WDW resorts or deposited for an II trade.

If you cancel 1-30 days from arrival date, the points go into "holding".

1. They can be used for a new DVC reservation booked 60 days or less before the new arrival date, during your Current Use Year.

2. They can be used for an exchange through Disney Collection, Concierge Collection, Adventure Collection and World Passport Collection, if you are making the reservation 60 days or less before the new arrival date, but more than 60 days before the end of your Use Year.

3. They cannot be banked or borrowed.

4. They will expire at the end of the Use Year if they are not used.

(Above is paraphrased from DVC 2002-2003 Handbook, Page #37)

Last year, we had to cancel a trip at the last minute. 294 points were put into holding. Since we had to use them quickly, we stayed at AKL concierge level. It was a wonderful trip, but sure was alot of points!

294 points. Peanuts, I'm now a proud owner of 436 points in holding with a March use year. Only good thing here is January.

Got a visit from Mr. Murphy. We were going to take family, but neice, who had three kids via invitro(?) got a surprise. She got pregnant the old fashion way. Doctor advised against travel 2 weeks out from check-in. Wife and I decided to gamble for later in the year.

Like my dad use to say. "you get everything planned out, then life happens". In this case it did life happened and is due in Sept. Nice thing about it we get to introduce another one to Disney.
