There was a thread about adding vinegar to a load of towels to get rid of a sour smell. But...do I ONLY add the vinegar and run it? Or do I add vinegar AND detergent? I've never done this before!

Add the vinegar and detergent. It really works great.

It also helps clean the inner workings of your washer and the drain if you have "hard" water (i.e. lots of minerals).

Well, the towels are in the dryer, so we'll see how well it works!

OK...at the risk of sounding dumber than a bag of hammers...how much vinegar do you use?

Thanks....Terri

I always use about 1 cup.

Ooooh...I just love all the DIS BOARD tips!!! That is an awesome idea....

One cup of white vinegar + the detergent...I am going to try that for sure.
My DH and DS are Land Surveyors and they get their clothes sooo dirty and smelly. I will let you all know. :goodvibes

Just wondering.....exactly how dumb IS a bag of hammers? :lmao:

Good question. :confused3

I never measure the vinegar, I just pour some in.

Do you add it during the wash or rinse?

Add it during the wash as the tub is filling up. Baking soda also works to get rid of odor. Finally, if you have new dark colored clothes run them thru the wash with just vinegar. It'll help set the colors so they won't fade or run as easily.

These are great tips! I bought the Fefreeze for Luasndry a couple of times. It did remove some odor, but it's hard to find and very pricey.

Does it have to be a new box of baking soda or can we use the one that has been in the fridge? How much baking soda? I'm also assuming you don't use the baking soda at the same time as the vinegar. I suspect it would foam up in some weird reaction. :)

Ditto!
Can you use the baking soda from the fridge? That would be so cool if you could but I wonder if it has lost its power (or whatever) after being in the fridge for a while....? I generally throw it down the disposal to clean that when I am changing up boxes. But I would rather put it in the washing machine.

I'm afraid it might have absorbed the flavors & odors from the fridge & then get transfered to the clothes.

I've never tried the baking soda thing, but I think I'd stick with fresh, not the refrigerator box.

Of course this is coming from someone who just did the vinegar thing with a load of jeans this morning in an attempt to set the color a bit and I just added it to the final rinse. Of course I also tossed in some salt and I don't see that mentioned anywhere... maybe I just had my favorite salt and vinegar chips on my mind. Who knows if that helped or not. :confused3
Duh - running the vinegar first before washing does make more sense. :teeth:
