We are going to WDW in 5 days! :cool1: Ok DH and I were talking about and wondering what is pin trading? Thinking our 5 year old son might enjoy it.

Here is my questions

Is he to young?

What is pin trading? How does it work?

Or you thinking don't even start as I am remembering collection Disney Beanies! :rolleyes1

Thanks so much!

No, he's not too young. You'll need to explain it to him, of course, but my DD started at age 6 and loved it.

At that age, I'd stick to trading with cast members for the most part. DS would approach a CM who was wearing a pin lanyard and ask if they would like to trade. (They will, but it's good to start by asking) The CM will show DS their lanyard and he chooses a pin to take and a pin from his own lanyard to give them in return. Then he says Thank You and everyone moves on. :)

I think it's the green lanyards that signal that that CM will only trade with children, but DD hasn't had anything but positive experiences with any CM trader.

DD has also traded with non-CM's, but while I hang back when she' strading with CMs, I hover when it's someone else. To be honest, we've only met really nice people through trading, but I've heard stories of sharks who will try to trade their $3 pin for that $30 pin DS doesn't realize he has. I realize that I worry about that too much, but I'd rather hover a bit than worry about it. :)

I odn't know if you've gotten any pins yet, but you can get pins to trade in a few ways. At the parks, you can buy starter sets that have a lanyard plus duplicate pins so you can keep one and trade one. Ebay is a good source for cheap pins (lots can be found for $3-4 per pin) but make sure that what you are buying is tradable in the parks - official pins are fine and worry-free in that respect. I've also heard that the outlets near WDW sometimes have pins on sale. While I tend to be cheap, DD will save up money so she can pick out pins at the parks, too. She won't usually trade those, but you can always buy duplicates and trade those.

Make sure you find out when the pin talk at MK is, too. That could be interesting and they will explain how it all works, as well.

Have fun! Pin trading can be a whole lot of fun! Addictive, but fun. :)

I would purchase from Mousepinsonline.com. Best Price and the quality isn't bad. They are accepted at all parks. Depending on how many you buy they can get down to 1.64 each. That is where I got the pins for my 3 yr old DD.

She had a blast trading with CM's. It is the Green Lanyards that are specific for children.

I would recomend buying more then you think you will use, as it get's quite exciting and buying pins in the parks can get expensive.

No way is he too young! YOu can do it at any age. Here are some things to keep in mind as you wander around looking:

1.Cast members don't care! They don't even buy the pins!

2. You can lok for any set, hidden mickeys, cast exclusive, what ever!

3. Have fun with it!

Pin trading is a wonderful way for a 5 year old child to learn many life lessons. They will learn patience, when the CM is busy with someone else and they need to wait their turn to trade. Good manners will be reinforced when you require them to ask nicely if they may see the CM's pins and say thank you at the conclusion (whether they have traded or not). It helped our DS to learn to speak up so that others may hear him and he got much better at making eye contact through trading with CM's. They are usually quite kind to the smaller children and may ask what characters the child is collecting. The hardest part often for the child is deciding which one of their treasures to give up. I agree with the poster above who said to purchase more than you think you will need for traders. You will find that this hobby is very addictive!!

Have a great trip - and let us know how it all went when you return!

Pin talks are done by Scoop Sanderson @ Expo Hall on Main St in MK Sun-Wed @ 1PM (Expo Hall is at front of park across from City Hall) (Pin Talk is in back)

Addictive (remember your collecting beanie babies)

The best part of this hobby is the great friendships you develop
