Question on booking AP with fellow travelers

If I'm not mistaken, you can book the AP rate for more than one room, correct? My husband and I (the AP holders) will be in one room, but we have friends traveling with us who will be in another.
Question 1:
Would I have to put both rooms in our names or can I specify they are traveling with us, book one in their name and flash my AP when I check into my room (we will be checking in before them)?
Question 2:
Here is the big wrench: If our friends plan on staying one night longer than us, do we have to book the rooms separately or will Disney let us book two rooms at differing length of stays with the AP discount?
Thanks!

They will book it as two separate ressies because there are different check-out dates. You would still be able to get the AP rate on both rooms, but would be required to be there with your AP when they check-in.

Another question or two:
When I book, can one be in my name and the other in one of our non-AP-holder friends' names and both of us get the discount if we check in on the same day and I flash my AP? We have four adults total, so if we booked one in my name and one in my DHs, we would have to switch around the names of registered guests for both rooms. Could this be done at check-in?
This extra night our friends are staying is what's throwing me in a loop. I'm sure I'm making this a LOT more complicated than it has to be! And I thought I knew just about everything about APs!

EDIT
OK, no need to answer my questions for my benefit. I decided to keep the AAA rate of $8 more per night to avoid the hassle of trying to book the rooms and the timing of check-in day so that we are there the same time as our friends.
However, I hope this thread can answer any questions for someone who might find themselves in a similar situation.
But thanks for the response I did have!

I'm pretty sure the passholder's name has to be on both reservations. When I booked 2 rooms (through BRP), I had to book each one separately under my name. I called CRO before we actually left to ask if I should change the name on the 2nd room to who was actually staying there and they said it didn't really matter. I'm not sure if it's changed now that the program has changed.

You just need to tell the CM what you are trying to do and they will assist you. We were able to put the room under our relative's name and they don't have an AP. I think it really just depends on who you talk to and how experienced they are with booking multiple room ressies.

I booked 3 rooms ap discount all in different names last year but had them linked so they could all get the ap from my card. We had different stays just crossing over for 2 days. We ended up not using ap. But when I went to make one last change they wouldnt let me access their ressie (after i already had several times). Don't quite know what the problem was but we got it resolved.
