Question from a newbie regarding renting points

Hello All:
I have read the FAQ's, etc. but I haven't found the exact answer for one of my questions. I hope this is the right board to post it on; I apologize if this question belongs on another board.
My wife and I are considering joining DVC, but realistically we are probably 2 or 3 years away from making the financial commitment.
In the meantime, I am interested in possibly renting points to check out one of the resorts (and because it looks like it might be a really good deal), but I want to make sure that I am understanding all that it entails.
As a hypothetical:
A Sunday-Thursday night stay at OKW (studio) during Dream Season requires 10 points a night (or 50 points).
If I were to rent 50 points at $10.00/point ($500 total), what other fees would there be?
Obviously, I realize that park hoppers, food, long distance phone calls, etc. are not included.
But would there be tax, maintenence fees, transaction fees, resort fees, parking fees (if I were to park my car at the resort during my stay), addititional fees, etc?
Or would I pay the renter $500 (and nothing else) and then just show up at the resort and not have any other fees out of pocket?
I'd appreciate any info. And again, I apologize if this belongs on a different board.
Thanks!
Rick

The rental fee is all that you would pay. Disney will take a credit card imprint which will allow you to charge things (food, purchases, etc..) to your room account which you will settle upon checkout.

Sometimes people will have a "service charge" for using Paypal to cover the Paypal fees. There is no parking fees on property when you are staying on property. There is no taxes or other fees. Park admission of course is extra.

I have 151 points to rent by June 2005, let me know if you are interested and I will work with you. My points are $10/point.

Thanks,
Diana

Thanks Diana!
That is exactly the info that I was looking for! I have added this board to my favorites. We are not planning a trip right now (our most recent trip was in January 2004), but when we do start planning our next trip, I will definitely want to look into renting points. My wife and I are both planners and booking 11 months in advance won't be a problem for us.
Thanks again for the great info! I just wanted to make sure that I understood how renting points works.

p.s.
I actually have one more question. When someone says that they have 200 points to rent does that mean they are trying to rent all 200 or is that just the max they have to rent? Is it acceptable to ask to rent 60 points from someone that says they are renting 200? Or is that something that varies owner to owner, etc.?
I am new, so if that is a silly question, I apologize. Also, unfortunately, I am not looking to rent points at present. So I hope these questions aren't wasting the time of owners looking to rent points right now. I just want to make sure that I fully understand what all is involved; so down the road when I am ready to rent points I can make a quick decision.
Thanks!
Rick
Hopefully, these questions will also be helpful for other people that are currently planning, etc.

Usually, when someone states they have 200 points- they are willing to rent any amount up to that number. If they have any restrictions (some may rent all 200 for one rate and less for a higher amount per point) they will usually mention that in their listing.

If you have any questions, be sure to ask the member offering the points- as each transaction is definitely different and negotiable.

Enjoy!

I rented twice before buying. I think this is an excellant idea; it helps you see just how much you like the DVC, and may help you decide which resort(s) you prefer.

As stated before, the rental price includes tax, parking, and other mandatory charges that hotels often tack onto the bill. However, bear in mind that you will need to pay extra if you want daily housekeeping or a daily change of towels. The DVC is a timeshare, and few timeshares provide free daily cleanings. When staying on DVC points, you get one free cleaning a week, and clean towels once mid-week.

A lot of members don't mind the absence of daily cleaning, especially if they are in a one bedroom or larger unit and can just toss towels into the in-unit washer/dryer to freshen them.

Welcome to the Dis Boards. You have a good idea to rent before buying, even if that is a while away.

When you are ready to rent, I suggest you do a search of past posts for the person you are renting from to get a feel for the person. You will be able to find out a lot about someone by reading what they have said on these boards. You will also learn a lot about how much they know about DVC and whether they rented before or not.

Good luck.

Just want to echo what has already been said.

We rented before we bought too. Before we rented, I did a search on the person we were renting from to see how long they have been a member of the DIS, are they active, do they just post to rent points, etc.

I found a person who has been a member of the DIS for years and read his posts. I felt comfortable that this was not someone who found the DIS just as a possible source to rent points. Always leary about renting from someone who just appeared on the DIS nad the first post is about renting points.

Find a comfort level and go for it! We were so happy we did and with our DVC purchase. It has truly changed how we vacation.

Good luck!

I agree but it seems like we are seeing a lot of that lately.
