Question for Zurg (and anyone) re: Digital Cameras

I ended up buying a Fuji Finepix 2650, because I got an excellent deal on it.

My question -- are digital cameras WSYIWYG in low light? Please advise ...

I'm still tinkering around with my DC (had it over a year ), but you can do A LOT with the software you use on your computer. The program that came with my HP camera does wonders - brightens, darkens, highlights, sharpens, blurs, all kinds of things. You may want to play around with your program on some test photos to see what tricks it has for you. Hope that helps somewhat!

If you are talking about the actual taking of the picture, I have found that on an automatic setting, the digital will really enhance the lighting, sometimes to the point of not looking natural, or at least not looking the way you want, though very bright. As far as pictures which have been taken, you can, as said, use software to change the look considerably. You can have a lousy looking picture but work on it a bit and come up with something quite useable.

Just to amplify on what Dan said...

Your camera probably has automatic exposure control so it will meter the scene and adjust the exposure time to gather enough light to make the picture. Sometimes it makes the picture look "unusual".

If you want your picture to look a certain way, either make your exposure by manually adjusting shutter speed and appeture, take the shot and see what it looks alike and make further adjustments if needed.

Most photo software will allow you to lighten, sharpen or change the contrast in the picture after the fact. Just make sure you make a copy of the photo file before your irreversibly change it.
