Question for those who have been on Disney's California Screamin

hi all,

I've always been really scared when it comes to roller coasters - and up until last summer my limit has always been splash mountain.

But last year we visited Disneyland, and probably because I thought it might be a 'Once in a lifetime' type trip, I braved every ride in the parks. And what it made me realise, was that it's the drop in splash mountain that I hate (in fact it's still the worst ride I do - I found both Tower of Terror and Califoria Screamin a walk in the park by comparison!).

So....my question is... How do the thrill rides at UO compare to California Screamin? I am really keen on trying The Hulk, and wondered if that was similar in terms of smoothness and lack of teetering drops?! I also wondered how Dudley Do Right compares drop wise to Splash and Jurassic - I hate the stomach in my mouth feeling - something I didn't get on either CS or TOT last year.

Dudley is comparable to Splash although not as long a ride , the drop is every bit the drop that Splash is. Jurassic park is a bigger drop but you are in a much a larger boat so I'd say that about equals out. The drop is a couple of seconds at most.

As to coasters, I'd say on a par with the DCA Ca Screamin.

I think the flume rides are a lot easier as it's just a couple seconds of speed and drop whereas the coasters are a few minutes. I don't think the CS coaster in Ca is a 'weinie" ride and the ones in FL are not either. The Hulk coaster was being remodelled when i was there last so I can't speak to the new version of that one though.

I am not a big fan of coasters with "air time", ie drops, but I love Hulk and Dragons. Rocket comes in 3rd for me, as it is not as smooth and tends to give me a headache. It does not have many drops, but more than the other 2. We will be at Sea World this summer after Mako opens. I plan to ride, but I don't think I will enjoy it as much as the other coasters there because it is more of an "air time" coaster.

If you can do California Screamin, you can easily do Mummy and Rip Ride Rockit. Hulk is definitely more intense than Screamin' with many more inversions. Dragon Challenge is also more intense and I find that inverted coasters (ones that are hanging) are very different in feel than the sit downs like Screamin'. However, neither Hulk nor Dragon Challenge have that drop feeling.

I love Screamin' but Hulk and Dragon Challenge terrify me. I go on them with DS, but I dislike them.


Have you ever tried breathing out slowly while on a drop? I do that on splash; I also do it on the big long drop on Screamin'. It really really helps with the stomach feeling.

A bit OT but Mako at Sea World should fit the bill nicely. Dudley Do Right's last drop used to be better at it before being reprofiled.

Me too!!! After years of avoiding them, first year at Universal, as soon as I did one drop ride.....I was hooked!! The bigger the drop the better........

Shame new ride is at SW.......we don't go there........

I thought Dudley used to be steeper somehow.......but wondered if I had imagined it.

Dudley originally had an more curved drop where the angle continued to increase so you never quite felt as stable. In 2004 it changed to a more traditional "straight" drop. In this picture you can see the new change added above the original themeing.

California Screamin is probably my favorite coaster of all time let me say first of all. Hulk and Rip Ride Rockit are waaay more intense. Agree with previous poster that Dudley does seem a bit steeper than Splash - don't think DH agrees though - he is terrified of Splash!

Ooh thank you all for all of your great replies! - although I'm not sure I'm any closer to knowing how I'll get on!! Lol!!

I don't like the sound of 'more intense' & haven't tried any rides yet where you are 'hanging'!!! But....conversely I think I've now worked out that it's the drops/air time that I don't like - case it point with Splash mountain - I think it's the anticipation of the climb there that also doesn't help me!! -so perhaps I'll love these (I love Everest, the mummy & rock n roller coaster - I think that's because they all keep moving and there's no dramatic build up to drops!!) ..... I guess the only thing is for me to give them a try!! Aaah!!

I love CA Screamin, and loved nearly all the roller coasters at Universal. The one I was uncomfortable with was rip rocket because it only has a lap bar, made me so nervous for my skinny daughter next to me. I thought both Hulk and the dueling dragons were so smooth and fun... You really should give them a shot! If you don't like Splash, all three wet rides have a similar drop to splash mountain. But we loved the wet rides, they are no joke, get soaked rides at universal!
