Question for those who fly through Detroit

This question goes out to those who fly into Detroit on Delta partner small planes and transfer to a Delta big planes. Are all flights gates in the same area now or do you still have to go through the lit tunnel and upstairs to catch flights? We have scheduled a short layover for next January and not sure we'll make it if there are weather delays due to de icing the plane. Thanks!

I don't fly through Detroit, but I do fly out of a small airport on small planes. Go to the Delta website, click on flight status. Check on your fights for 'yesterday' and 'today'. That will tell you the gates where you will land and take off. Then look at a map of the airport to find the gates. Do this as often as you can and you'll get an idea of the distance between gates.

I fly Lansing-Detroit-Somewhere frequently. The small planes go to the B/C gates and the big planes go to the A gates. More likely than not, you'll need to go through the underground, weirdly lit tunnel. I just did at Phoenix flight over the weekend. We had a 45 minute scheduled layover and it took maybe 15 minutes to go from one of the farthest A gates to a C gate (not the farthest away). You are wise to consider the weather, but if I had at least 45 minutes of a layover scheduled, I go with it.

De-icing the plane at the outstation? That's usually accounted for in the block times. For example if your scheduled to leave at 6:00am, you will most likely push off the gate at about 5:50am. If delta sold you it, it is a legal connection and thus you will be protected on the next flight if you do arrive late for some reason.

Protection won't get me home unfortunately. In January there was only one flight back to marquette, ended up with a 4.5 hour layover in Detroit on the way home. There are no other flights into Marquette after ours next January. Have to cross my fingers and hope for the best I guess.

Yeah, you are in a bit of a worse position. Usually there are a few flights per day to Lansing or I can always drive. Driving to Marquette is completely different -- practically half the distance to WDW! Are those DTW to Marquette flights typically full? They have held the last Lansing flight for late connections in the past. We've been both waiters and runners for those.

Yes, especially the last flight if they have 2 as it is hard to find flights arriving in Detroit that aren't after the Detroit to Marquette is already in the air, hence the 4.5 hr layover this winter.
