Question for SWA Rapid Reward experts!

I am considering doing the one-time conversion of points to credits to earn an award. Would that reward be the like the old kind, and it would expire in 1 year? In Oct, my old credits will start expiring so if I'm going to do it, I probably should by then. Does anyone know if the award's expiration date can be extended 1 year by paying the $50 like we used to be able to do? I plan to use it late Aug 2013 so I'll need to extend it for sure.
We're thinking of an Alaskan cruise out of Seattle so that's one of those fares that we'd do better under the old system than the new.

WWYD? I'd appreciate any tips.
