Can you put, into words, what has kept you motivated? How do you keep at it, day after day? What keeps you from giving up/cheating?

I can't seem to keep motivated for more than a week or two. I thought some of you successful losers might have ideas to share.

For anything you can offer, thank you. I have gained 50 pounds in the last two years, 30 in the last year. It is time for a change!

  • Keep a journal - it is very helpful.....you can do that on WISH, that way you have a support system of others trying to lose weight or trying to keep a healthy lifestyle.

  • Keep a picture of a celebrity, or an athelete that you admire and would like to get down to the size of.....This has been a great motivator for me in the past - I still have to pick out a new person :)

  • Go to meetings - Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. all of the people there act as a support system as well. Always, very helpful

I hope this ideas have helped you.

Best Wishes in 2006,

Jodi

I also find it's helpful to take it one day at a time. I lost my weight in 15 months and have worked at keeping it off for about a year now. I know when I first started, I was almost overwhelmed by the thought of losing 100+pounds. I didn't think I could stick with it but I decided that each day was going to pass by whether I actually did something about my weight or not. I could either be lamenting how another year has gone by and I'm still fat or I could actually do something about it by taking baby steps to accomplish things. I refused to think about how long it would take. I just focused on this one day. Eating on plan for "today". Working out "today". Staying cheat free "today" and before I knew it, I had had a string of weeks of "todays" and then months. After a while I became so stubborn and determined that I looked at it like a game (I'm super competitive). I considered it a challenge to go to a party and eat only on plan stuff (even if it meant offering to bring a dish or two of my own). I have even taken my own 100% whole wheat bread to a restaurant if I wanted a burger. This always mortified my teen son but I didn't care.

I didn't develop the determination all at once but once I got a taste of what losing weight was like, I didn't want to let it go. There is an expression in the weight loss world that goes, "nothing tastes as good as thin feels". That is so true. The first time I put on a size 16 jeans I cried. The first time I was able to shop in "regular" sized clothing stores and left Lane Bryant behind (for good), I cried. When I squeezed myself into a size 8 (vanity sized yes) capri stretch jeans, I cried again. These of course were tears of joy. Nothing, no donut, cookie, cake, candy, pie, or anything else could possibly taste as good as standing in front of a full length mirror weighing 109 pounds less than you did 2 years before!

You are so worth it and you can do it. Definitely come here daily (I've been missing for quite a while from this board but I'm back now to lose my last 10-15 pounds), join a challenge, the kind ladies and gents of WISH helped me so much when I was in the major weight loss phase of my program, keep a journal and most important remember that you can do this. Believe in yourself. The most valuable lesson I have learned is that weight loss (for me at least) is 90% mental and 10% what I put in my mouth and my exercise routine. We sure know how to talk ourselves out of doing things, don't we? I figure if I can negative talk myself fat, I can positive talk myself thin. You can do this and we are here to help you!!!

Thank you for the responses. I think starting a journal is a good idea. I also like the idea of focusing on "today." It is very overwhelming when you think about the total amount you need to lose or the many months that it will take to get to goal.

Since I have nutrisystem food left over (atleast two weeks worth) I have started that today. So far so good. I even got in some exercise...out sledding with my DS for 3 hours. That normally would have been 3 hours of sitting on my rump reading the DIS.

So today is today. Tomorrow will get here soon enough.

Now I am off to start a journal here.

Any more advice/words of wisdom welcome. Thanks!!!

  • Hey, I do this too! I put the pic right on the treadmill and cover up the numbers. It gives me a goal to look forward too.

I journal my daily exercise. I probably should journal food also. I've lost 55 pounds since joining WISH. It's a day by day thing and you can't beat yourself up for messing up one day. Just start new and fresh the next day!

    Good Luck! :goodvibes

That's cool - I have another person like me out there! Congratulations on the fantastic weight loss. :goodvibes

You guys are really inspiring me...such amazing results. I cannot wait to join the ranks!

I also would say the journal is absolutely critical to long-term success. I've lost almost 85 lbs since Sept 2004. I journal all my food, even on bad days and I keep a journal of mini goals, feelings, etc. I try to capture how I feel so I can look back and remember what I want and don't want. It also helps when you are in a slump and you can go back and remind yourself that you've been in slumps before and this one, too, shall pass.

Good luck!

Lisa-- Its so good to see you posting

threadjack - thanks Sunny. It's so good to be back here. I can't believe I waited so long to come back. Hope things are going well with you!

To the OP, it sounds like you are fired up! Good for you. It really is about taking it one day at a time and getting your mind around the idea that this weight didn't come on overnight and it's not going to melt away overnight either but if we do what we need to do daily, it will come off!

Good job everyone (WTG Liz!)
I first lost the weight (45lbs when doc told me to stop loosing) when my older brother (5.5yrs older) had a massive heart attack/heart surgery May 03. It scared the hell out of me! Our father died in 1994 from heart disease so now we know its hereditary.

I keep track of my daily food intake on fitday.com. Theres some days Im too high so I make up for it other days. But I can SEE it!
Get at least 30mins exercise/day
