Is Tony Lukes cheesesteak the best? I was drooling today watching Throwdown w/ Bobby Flay going against Tony Luke. My goodness, cheesesteak with brocoli rabe, I wanna send my husband on a road trip.

IMO, not even close. There are several places that get recognition as having the best. None of them are all that great, IMO. I could name 10 places better than Tony Luke's.

Most of the famous places are tourist places OR they are open extremely late.... some places youcan even get a cheesesteak at 3AM...... Lots of the famous ones are near concert venues, and celebrities go because they are close to the venue they played or are staying at.

I think the BEST places aren't even in the city proper.

jeeeezzz, Woman...why didn't you just ask me? The ONLY place to get a cheesesteak is PAT'S or GENO'S...now, I don't want you to ever ask another question like this again :sad2:

So I guess it's not worth a road trip?

But boy oh boy, it looked so good on tv.

Ya know, I think there's a Pats in Wildwood that we used to go to when we got home after the bars. I don't remember if I loved it because it was good or because I was loaded? :confused3

Well, they are "ok" but stay away from cheese whiz! When in that area I prefer Oregon Steaks.....

And my all time favorites are Pudgie's in Blue Bell and Norristown, or Dallesandro's in Roxboro........

If they weren't so dang unhealthy, I could easily eat them once or twice a week. I probably eat one once a month.

Grew up in Philly now living in Connecticut and still can't find a good cheesesteak here. When I was in the city Pat's was the place to go no matter what time of night or day!! Took by wife into the city when we were first dating and after parking the car she thought I was nuts taking her in for one. I told her she was in one of the safest places in the city, if you want to say that 9th and Washington St. was safe? After that off to the Mummers Museum she never even heard what a Mummer was and of course had to do the Mummer strut for her. Just remember it's wit or witout forget that and it's back to the end of the line.
Hey, forgetaboutit!!!!

I've never had Tony Luke's steaks, but their roast beef and sharp provolone is awesome. We usually stop there before Phillies or Flyers games.

Papa Deuce, keep listing the good places. We do road trips. :)

In CC Philly the best, IMO, is Gianfranco's at 3rd and Market, But really, I think the best are not in the city. There is one one in Media, PA, and I don't remember the name, but it is among the best as well.

CC Philly doesn't have a great cheesestaek place, IMO. There ussed to be one that was UNBELIEVEABLY good. It was owned by two lesbian women. A rumor was spread that one had AIDS, and the next thing you know, they were out of business. By far and away they were the best I have ever had.

What's everyone's take on Jim's on South Street? I went there a few times when I lived in CC one summer doing an intership, oh, probably ten years ago. (My dad grew up in NE Phila and believe it or not, in all my visits from NY to see grandma and the aunts and uncles as a kid, no one ever took me to Genos OR Pats!)

I'm partial to Jim's Steaks on South Street- mmmmm.......

Jim's is pretty much like the other 2. And they have that yucky cheese whiz avaialble! Forr the love of all that is right with a cheesesteak, please do not use that stuff! :lmao:

ETA.... in order to be a Philly cheesesteak, it MUST be on an Amoroso's roll.... no other comes close!

Dallesandro's in Roxboro.........

The only reason I miss working in Germantown! They got my vote for best! (At least 12 years ago.)

Spent the first 18 yrs of my life in Philly..... We lived in the NE.

I never have been to Pat's or Geno's..... (is that a crime?)

One of the best Cheesesteaks i've eaten was from a little deli place called Gooey Louie's off of Mouemensing (sorry about the sp) Ave in South Philly. My DSF found that place when he was in CG reserves down on Delaware ave. (or is it Washington Ave now.)

Their steaks (and hoagies for that matter) are so huge you almost have to take half the meat off to eat it.

Tony Luke's is actually better known for thier pork italian or veal italian sandwiches. Sliced pork in gravy with your choice of rabe or spinach, both sauteed in garlic and sharp provolone cheese. The veal in a tender veal cutlet (not that patty junk) again topped with rabe or spinach and sharp provolone cheese. The rolls are top knotch, not too sfot or too chewy. The have a good cheese steak, good chicken or veal parm---we just LOVE Tony Luke's.

Ahh, cheesesteaks. Nothing is more guaranteed to create fights and rifts among Philadelphians ;)

Papa, don't go dissing Pat's and Geno's- they are good. Yes, they serve a lot of tourists, but those long lines aren't just full of people coming fresh from the airport. Jim's is about the same. But one thing about Philly- just about every neighborhood has a small deli or pizza shop that makes awesome steaks!

Each little section of Philly has their best steaks.
My wife's family is from Roxborough and I prefer Barry's over D'Allesandro's.
I live in the Far Northeast and I like Speedy's or Aldi's.

Someone recently told me that the secret to a great Philly steak is the water and the roll.

They mix a little of Philly water to keep the meat from drying out on the grill.

Amoroso's rolls - that's the main reason you can't get a good cheesesteak outside of the Philly area. When I lived in Vegas there was shop where they actually had the rolls shipped in from Philly (they had Tasty Kakes too). Other than that shop in Vegas I've never had a cheesesteak that comes close to a real Philly one.

Good cheese steak in Media, would that be Appollo's right on state street? YUM!
