Question for non-UK DISers

I don't know of any establishments that are solely for fish and chips, but fish and chips is on the menu of most local restaurants here. Haddock is the local specialty, whether in fish and chips form or a fish sandwich, alongside the typical lobster rolls, clams, scallops, etc. We have a ton of seafood restaurants here (Maine coast), so you can't really go far without encountering fish and chips.

Hard to find something like that outside of fast food in the bbq land that I live in. You'll find them on a menu but not a stand alone place really.

There was a chain called H. Salt Esq. that started in the San Francisco Bay Area (first shop in Sausalito) that became hundreds of franchised locations before KFC bought them. They mismanaged it badly, but some of the old franchises are allowed to continue to use the name and still operate.

This place does something closer to British style battered fish, but they serve it with thinner American style fries.

As far as not in the UK, fish and chips are pretty common in Australia and New Zealand.

There is still one open in Sacramento in an absolutely AWFUL location, yet it stays in business. It is less than a mile from where my worked. If she had to work an OT shift on Saturday night I would bring her dinner and that was a place on my list of places for those dinners.

Fries? If the chippy you went in was serving fries (the skinny McDonalds things) then that wasn’t a proper chippy. I can’t say much about the chippies in London (it’s just a big tourist hell hole to me), but in proper chippies up north you get a huge portion of roasting hot, golden, thick chips straight from the fryer and then you normally drench them in enough salt and vinegar to kill a man, that’s the thing that makes it for me. All the chips are unseasoned, and either the person portioning them out will ask if you want salt and vinegar, or it’s just a given that you drench them yourself. If you’ve had chips without salt then I feel your pain

The Tugboat chain here claims to be London Style fish and chips and they serve the type fries (or chippy) describe. They have newspaper articles from when they opened 25 years ago framed and posted in the restaurant where they get criticized for those fries. And their Yelp reviews have some wishing they got those fast food type fries instead.
And I have to be honest, we always substitute onion rings for fries.
