Has anyone experienced depression from it? I've been thinking I had PPD but it's lasting so long even with treatment (granted not the best treatment, I'm still trying to find a Dr. I fit with) that I'm wondering if it's from the hormones... I have noticed that I always feel worse around "that time" which leads me to believe it could be causing it. I've just had this feeling about it ever since I got it put in, that things weren't quite right.

I would definitely ask your doctor about this. I have the Mirena as well, and have been experiencing some different symptoms, such as painful during... well you know :P But depression hasn't been one of them. It could be prolonged PPD as well, you may need a more intensive treatment (higher medication dose, another counseling session, something similar to that). But definitely go ahead and ask your doctor regardless, they may recommend the copper IUD instead, since there's no hormones associated with it.

I don't use the Mirena IUD but am considering it for heavy bleeding. I have discussed it, at length, with my doctor because I don't do well with hormones at all. I have been told that the progestin in Mirena does not go systemic, does not leave the uterus. I'm taking them at their word that this is true.

I've never used the Mirena, but I was on BC pills, very low dosage, for four months. I've never felt worse in my life. When I realized the only time I felt normal was the week I didn't take it each month, I read the insert in the package and depression was listed as a possible side effect. Two days off the pills I was back to normal.

I felt the same way on the pill--awful. I'm told that Mirena does not do that, plus, it has no estrogen in it (which is usually what is responsible for feeling lousy).

I have the Mirena and have not had that issue. It took some time for 'Aunt Flo' to go away entirely, and just recently did my PMS symptoms go away. I think I've had it for 2 years.

I have problems with the hormones in the pill as well, and I really am done having kids, so the IUD has been great for me.

I have had the Mirena iud since October. I got it for heavy/irregular bleeding. The bleeding is slowing down but it is taking longer than I had hoped. The only side effect I have is that the cramping/bloating at the beginning of my period is worse. The mood issues are nothing like when I was on the pill.

I've had mine for 3 yrs w/o any issues. Even w/no periods my doc said that PMS symptoms might still come around when my period would normally happen. If I would have gone by the advice on the internet I never would have gotten one. One website I looked at had every poster claiming that they gained weight, were bloated, etc. I talked to my doc extensively about the Mirena and I'm glad I made the choice to go with it. No problems w/insertion either. Good luck!

I agree, that is what I was told. That is why it is a "better" choice than the patch or oral contraceptive. I actually think it's great. No issues, lightened/eliminated my period, and no thought involved whatsover!

If you are having depression, it may be PPD or something else. Definitely find a doctor you click with. It's not good to be depressed!!! ;)

Yes, it could be the Mirena. I know it messed with my moods also. I had it for about 10 months. It made me super emotional and I would cry all the time for really really stupid things like if I couldn't find my keys. I was irritable ALL THE TIME. DH thought I was losing my mind at times:lmao:

I wasn't until the removal when I realized just how bad it had been. I felt like myself again after so long

Thanks for the replies everyone, I have just had this feeling about it but never really put two and two together until recently. I googled it and saw that depression can be a side effect so I wanted to hear from actual users to hear their stories. I've never taken any other form of BC because I hate the thought of taking more hormones just because of this sort of thing. I'll make an appt with the OB and will more than likely have it removed.
