Question for IPOD touch experts..

How can I tell the difference from the 2nd and 3rd gen ones ..
yes .. I can ask the sales people.. but lately ..not naming stores ..

some of the people have not be so helpful with info...
so just trying to learn here ...

ps thinking of getting one as a gift for xmas/birthday combo gift ..

I *think* the current generation, the 3rd one, is the first one to have an external speaker like the iphone. Others can listen to your music around you, and in a wireless area you can use the touch to make skype calls if you buy a set of ear buds with a speaker on them. I don't think any of that is possible with the second generation.

The second-gen Touch also had an external speaker. The first-gen didn't. The 3rd-gen is also available with more capacity, up to 64 GB. The previous generation only went up to 32 GB.

Oh, and the 2nd- and 3rd-gen also feature external volume controls (buttons) that are SO much easier to use than the ridiculous scrubber bar thingie on the 1st-gen. I owned a 1st-gen one and ended up returning it after about a week because the volume controls weren't consistently reliable...before I had the sound check option in iTunes, there were a couple of times I nearly deafened myself when music would come blasting out of the earbuds and the stupid scrubber bar wouldn't work. I was thrilled to bits when I saw that the second-gen ones had buttons and went out and bought one as soon as I could and absolutely loved it. I only got rid of it when I bought my first iPhone back in June.

The third generation ones have the voice software on them...you can say "what group sings this song?" or "Play next song" (the microphone is in the cord for the ear buds) and it does a voice over thing where it says the name of the group to you.

I did not know that about the 2nd generation touch having an external speaker ty.

3rd generation also has some hardware updates that make it faster
