I am planning a trip to England, Scotland and Wales for DD and I for next year after she graduates from high school. One of the places she really wants to visit is Stonehenge. She was wondering how close they let you get.

We will be visiting Endinburgh, Inverness, Loch Ness, Glasgow, Lake Windermere, Chester / Portmeirion / Wales, Caernarfon / Betws-y-Coed, Coventry / Warwick Castle,
Cotswolds / Stratford, Bath, Stonehenge and London.
Most of the time we will be with a tour group, but we will have free time in London. Any suggestions for things we shouldn't miss would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi there Feralpeg:wave2:

You're trip sounds fantastic, you are certainly visiting some lovely places - I love Warwick Castle. As I live near Coventry, I would be happy to pop into our tourist information to pick up some leaflets about Coventry and Warwick for you. Just pm me your address and I'll get these out to you this week.

Have fun planning your trip

What a great (and hectic!) schedule!

Last time we visited Stonehenge (about two or three years ago) we were able to get within about 20 yards of the stones. The car park is a little way removed from the stones and you have to walk a few hundred yards along a path (and through a tunnel under the road) to reach the site. The path then makes a full circle around the site, with various information boards along the way. You could also pick up a personal audio-guide if you wished.

This seemed to make the area around the stones a lot quieter and more remote from everything than it really is. I thought it would be harder to block out the passing traffic and number of visitors, but it actually felt quite serene and reverential on the path around the circle of stones.

Whether the set up has changed since we were there, I don't know, but I hope you enjoy what sounds like a fabulous trip :)

Gosh you will be busy! But you will see lots :)

I know a bit about Bath (lovely place with lots of history). How long are you planning to be in Bath so I can give you some "highlights" of the city?

Thanks for the information, guys! MIffy2003, we will only be in Bath 1 day. The entire trip takes place over two weeks so we will be movinig quickly.

I went to Hawaii many years ago with this tour company and they were wonderful. They took care of all the transportation, hotel, meals, etc. for us and had very informative guides. It didn't give us a lot of time on our own, but we saw so much. I'm sure this trip will be the same. Maybe after we do this trip with the tour company, we will have an idea of what we'd like to revisit on our own.

We do have some time on our own in London. Our hotel will be near Bond Street, Grosvenor Square and Oxford Street. If anyone is familiar with this area and can make suggestions of things to see, it would be greatly appreciated!

What an exciting trip, sounds wonderful and I am pleased to tell you that you are visiting one of the most beautiful places in Wales-Portmeirion. It is a little slice of heaven on earth. We have been there twice, you will love it. It also sells the most wonderful pottery.

Sounds a cool trip.

Betws-y-Coed is truly fantastic. I try to get there 3/4 times a year. You could feasibly stay in Betws and take a day trip to Portmeirion. But I do have one recomendation, if you do stay around Porthmadog (few miles from Portmeirion and central to the places in Wales you are going) why dont you take the 45 min drive down to Aberdaron on the end of the Lleyn Peninsula. We have been going as a family for 40 years now and it has never lost its charm. Google it for some photo's or I could e-mail you some if you want to PM your address.

Betws and Aberdaron dreaming.........
