Question adding DDP

We have a reservation for Nov. with rented points. This reservation was made in March before we became DVC members. Now that we are members, I called member services yesterday to add the DDP. I was told this had to be done by the member that made the reservation. I am fully aware that non-members are no longer allowed to call member services to confirm rented reservations or make changes (for obvious reasons) but..........I thought maybe since I'm now a member, and was able to make some "room requests", I would be able to add the dining plan as well (since it really doesn't affect the reservation in any way) Should I call MS back and try with a different CM or just call the renter and have him call and make the request.
Thanks
Tina

The CM is correct, the DVC owner you rented from must make the DDP addition for you, because in theory, the reservation and all costs associated with it belong to that member. You can not obligate the price of the DDP to that ressie, it must be done by the owner whose points are actually used.

Thanks for your quick reply Chuck
I just assumed that since you don't pay for the plan until check-in, it would be OK. I never thought of the stipulations associated with canceling the plan. Not sure what they are specifically, but I kind of remember being able to cancel 5 days in advance or was that the reservations had to be made 5 days prior to arrival? :confused3 Guess I better go back to the DDP thread  Do you forsee any reason why a rentor wouldn't want to add this to a rentees reservation?
Thanks for all your help.

they (owner) should do this for you with no problem

Since you are now an owner, you should be able to do it yourself as well.

But since the points were not transferred into their account, the ressie is still under the control of the points owner...and the DDP is tied to the ressie, not individual owners.

Chuck I hear what you're saying but in this case I believe the "renter" who is also an owner, will be able to add the DDP, make dining reservations, and add requests. They would not be able to do anything that would materially affect the contract itself. And I could see the answer being different every time you make that phone call.

But, if the diing plan must be reserved prior to arrival, doesn;t it also have to be "cancelled" prior to arrival if they change their mind? If someone should decide not to to pay for the dining plan when they arrive, does it then become the responsibility of the "owner?" Remember, this is not a DVC plan, but a CRO plan that they are allowing DVC to book, cash customers can not cancel at the last minute without penalty, can DVC? Would you like another owner to be able to make that "obligation" for you, without your knowledge?

I agree if the ressie is in his name and he is a member, he should be able to book the DDP.

Even if the OP is now a member, they don't own the points the reservation was made with. They cannot add or delete anything from the reservation. The member who owns the points will have to add it.

I had thought about that but don't bellieve you are correct. DVC would have no way to enforce this option if one didn't check in. And we already know you can potentially change it at check in no matter what MS says when you reserve it. I know of at least one situation directly related where the renter (also a member) was allowed to add the DDP and reqeusts and this happened after the change in access to MS. But I do suspect it'll vary with each phone call.

I am not a DVC member, but I am renting points in November. I called several months ago and added the DDP to my reservation without any problem. The CM I talked too was also quite willing to start making my ADRs. It was wonderful. :thumbsup2

But that won't happen again since they are now adhering to the policy that only members can call MS. If you rent again, the member you rent from will have to make all your additions.

Don't you just love it when Chuck and Dean get into something? LOL Talk about a mental summit! :rotfl:

Member Services is for MEMBERS. And since you are one, I think this is a no-brainer. Even though you are renting this particular reservation, they are there to assist those who pay the fees.

This very issue was discussed a couple of months ago, and as I recall, the renter/member was able to make their own changes/additions, etc. to a rented ressie. I suggest you call back and see if you can explain the situation clearly and and go from there.

LOL, this isn't even a good bar room disagreement. We're just noting two different sides to the equation.

Just to add another question to the discussion...

If a member adds DDP to a ressie that is being used by their guests, does the guest pay for it when they check in or is the DDP expense billed to the member ?

I was away form my computer for several days and was unaware this was a "discussion". I am happy to have some of my favorite "experts" sharing their thoughts. Thanks Dean for seeing my point of view. I just assumed that since I would be paying for the plan at check-in, there would not be a problem. I just don't see a risk to the member, mainly since there is no way DVC can charge anything to him. Btw, I e-mailed the member last week and haven't heard from him yet. I may end up calling MS back and pleading my case.
