Question about wine bottle purchase and DDE?

For those in the know. We will be using the DDE card for the first time this year. Thanks DIS boards, never knew this existed and I live in Florida . Question will a 18% gratuity include the price of a whole bottle of wine? I hope not, say for example, we purchase a $300.00 bottle of wine ( yeah yeah it might happen ) and then pay $54.00 just to open the bottle. This doesnt seem right. If no response today then I will call later and post the answer I get.

i have some expierence with this, it is on your total bill, we had dinner at turf club for our anniversary and bought a bottle of champagne and when the bill came the gratuity was on 18percent of our entire bill...which was great cause the bottle was expensive!

It will be on your total dinner bill, but the DDE is still the absolute cheapest way to get that $300 bottle of wine - regardless:

With DDE
$300 - Wine
$54 - Gratuity
$60 - Discount
$18.20 - Tax
$312.20 - Total Cost for Bottle of Wine


Without DDE
$300 - Wine
$45 - Gratuity (15% of $300)
$19.50 - Tax
$364.50 - Total Cost for Bottle of Wine

Without DDE and no tip for bottle of wine
$300 - Wine
$19.50 - Tax
$319.50 - Total Cost for Bottle of Wine

Thank you all so much for the information. I usually tip 10% of the wine purchase and 20% service. After posting this I thought I would look up what the service industry thinks. If you have time its a good read. I guess I have to change my thinking of tipping for wine.

For us, if we're looking at an expensive bottle of wine at a restaurant we usually request the help of the restaurant wine sommelier. Usually that person goes above and beyond to find the perfect bottle for us so we feel like they deserve the tip.

For example, at V&A last December, dh and I decided we wanted a really nice bottle of wine that was new to us. We had a price point and so we asked for help. If you've been to V&A you know their wine list is like a textbook that you could definitely hurt someone with. They spent quite a bit of time with us about our likes/dislikes etc. They recommened a bottle then found out they didn't have it so we started over again. They definitely deserved a 20% tip on the total bill which we did. I also think tipping is very personal and you should do what you feel is right.
