Question about using old ticket and scheduling FP

I have a couple of questions:
1) I have a 4-day park hopper from 2001 that has 3 days left on it. It doesn't expire. Can I link it to MDX so I can schedule FPs? Or do I need to contact Disney and have it activated in order to schedule FPs? I will also be buying a 2-day ticket soon as I will be going to parks at least 4 days.
2) Can I use one or two days on the older ticket and save the remaining day(s) for another time? In other words, can I keep one or two days on that ticket to use another time, or is it somehow converted to an expiring ticket once I use one of the days?

1a) It's so old that YOU may not be able to get it to link to MDX.
1b) It does not have to be "activated," but you may need help from Disney to get the ticket
to show in MDX. (And, it is POSSIBLE that they won't be able to link it until you are at WDW.)
1c) OK.
2a) Yes.
2b) Yes.
2c) Nope.

Try to link the ticket. If it won't link and Disney can't link it until you are at WDW,
my suggestion is to simply buy all new tickets for THIS trip.
And, get the old ticket linked when you are there.
Then, continue to save the old ticket for use on another trip.
(I'd really not want to use the old ticket -AND- a new ticket during the same trip, anyway.)

My experience with a 2001 non expiring ticket was that I had to go to Guest Services at the park to get it changed to a new ticket that can be used now. It was completely no issue to do so and didn’t take long. I called ahead to see if I could get it linked with no success.

Oh darn, I was afraid of that! Robo, why would you not use the old and new tickets on the same trip? Will MDX get confused?

What is involved with getting the old ticket linked at WDW? Just wondering if I can have a friend take it and get it linked for me? Or do I have to be there to get it linked?

You can have a friend take the old ticket and and get the remaining entitlements transferred to a new RFID card. That will have a number that you will be able to use to link it to MDE whenever you are ready. Everything else about the ticket will remain the same (number of days remaining, no expire option, etc.). I did this for my brother last year with no problem at all.

The recommendation to not use old and new tickets on the same trip is an issue of value. Those no expire, park hopper days are worth quite a lot now. If you are going to go to the parks for at least 4 days, it's better value to buy a new ticket for your trip, with the relative lower cost per day, and to save the no-expire days for future trips when maybe you only want to go for a day or two, where the cost per day to park hop would be much more expensive.

If you do purchase a new ticket, and the no-expire ticket has been linked to your MDE, make sure to stop by a ticket window to have the tickets prioritized so that the new ticket is the one used first. This should prevent them from taking days from the no-expire ticket before you are ready (but always good to check on things in the app after entering the park just to be sure the day was taken from the correct ticket).
