Question about upgrading to AP

Hi I was hoping someone could help me out with a question about upgrading to an AP. We currently have a Disneyland Package scheduled for a short weekend (Dec 8-10). Our package is through Costco and includes our hotel, tickets, and Max pass which we added on. We just found out our son has to attend another camp in Anaheim this April over spring break and have decided we would all go back and visit DL a second time. Because of this it makes sense for us to upgrade to an AP. My question is, how easy is that to do with the Costco package once there? Would it be better for me to cancel the entire package (I believe I have up to 30 days before arrival to do so without penalty) and purchase the AP on line and book the hotel separate? Or is it easy enough to do there with the Costco package? We have never had APs and this is not something I am at all familiar with. Thank you so much for your help.

One thing I would check before making your decision is whether your hotel offers an AP discount (some of the nearby hotels do offer this) and, if so, whether that rate is any better than your current Costco rate. Also, do the math on what you think you'll be spending on food and merchandise in the parks, then try to estimate your AP discount. Remember that different AP levels receive different percentage discounts. If the savings will be substantial and/or better than what your Costco savings will be, you might want to go with APs up front.

Thank you. Is there a way to see current AP discounts without having the AP? Thanks again for your help.

So I wonder if they gave me incorrect information, but I called and was told I could not book an AP rate without it being activated, even if I pay in full online? I explained I couldn't activate it until arrival because I live in WA state, so can't pick it up in DL before I arrive, but he still said I wouldn't be eligible for the AP rate until that day. Is that correct? Thanks again.

Hmmm... I always thought you could book the AP rate without activating first, as long as your AP would be activated by check in. At least, that is how our friends have done it in the past. For food and merchandise discounts, you can look on the AP page on the DLR website to see which levels get what percent discount. And someone here might be able to post the exact AP discount rate for your dates if you can specify which hotel you are looking at.
