Question about United Mileage Plus award seats

I was planning a trip and the first time I looked at the United website there were first class Mileage Plus award seats available. When I checked again a day later, there were no award seats available. All of the first class seats were still unoccupied according to the seating chart so it doesn't look like anyone else grabbed the award.

Does United remove unused award seats from their flights?

Has anyone seen them add more award seats to flights as the departure date nears?

My travel date is August 9

Someone else could have booked them but neglected/forgot/failed to select specific seats.

There could be other discounted paid seat categories which, when selected from, also decrement the number of available award seats.

I do not think the number of possible award seats, once set, gets decreased unless it is just a few days since IPO and the numbers loaded into the system were not quite right to begin with.

Award seat availability changes all the time. It is possible that award seats will open up; I have seen it happen numerous times. If you see a seat you want, grab it.
