i lost my job last month and filed for unemployment. this is the 1st time i've ever filed so i have NO idea how it works.
i got the letter saying that i qualify and how much my weekly benefit will be. i claimed my 1st 2 weeks and provided the info for my job search but i did it 2 days late. like i said, i didn't really know how it works and just didn't realize there was a certain date, or when that would be. i found out i should have claimed those weeks on march 5th, but it was already the 7th! i went ahead and submitted the info and it was accepted, but will the date cause a problem? and when should i expect a deposit? will i get any sort of notice, or just see the deposit in my checking account?
i am also planning on going to school, anybody know if i will still have to do the job search or will school exempt me from that? :confused3

please help!!! lol
thanks for any info :)

I know in my state if you go to school, You aren't eligible for unemployment. Look on the site it will tell you when you are going to get money. Here it comes on a Tuesday

unemployment varies by state so I would check your local unemployment office...but my first thought is if you missed the due date for your work search info - you might not get paid for those weeks

i thought i remembered obama speaking about how important it is for those on unemployment to be able to go to school?? hmm.....

that's what i was afraid of....
we don't have a local unemployment office, just a "one stop center" for basic help, job searches, computer access, stuff like that. calling the hotline is useless...guess i'll just wait and see!

As the PPs said, it does vary by state.

In NY (once you are in the system), you can claim any day in the week. If I claim on Sunday - my benefits are directed deposited on Wednesday, if I claim on Monday - they are in my account on Thursday, and so on.

Also, in NY - if you are attending school FULL-TIME, not only can you still receive benefits, you are exempt from having to look for (and proving) employment while you are in school.

Check your state's website for more info. Also, did they send you anything in the mail? NYS sends a big handbook that explains everything.

Good luck with the job search. :thumbsup2

You don't have a career center to go to check in every 4 weeks??? Here we have to check in every 4 weeks.

OP are you sure that you are approved. Just sign up and claiming isn't all there is to it.

no, that's why i have so many questions! the letter i got showed my weekly benefit amount and the dates for the benefit year but i never heard anything else. that's why i was late claiming my first weeks. i was waiting for more info. i went to that one stop center and was told how to go about claiming my weeks, so i did.....now what??

They will have to make sure you worked enough quarters and made enough money.
They will contact your past employer.

It takes a while for them to do all of that.

Your tag says you are in Florida. Have you even attempted to look at www.floridajobs.org for the relevant information? Or tried calling them? There's a phone number on that site. A quick search showed that job search requirements can be waived if you are enrolled in school in an approved program:

thanks for doing that search for me, i missed it. ;)
as far as calling...endless hold

past employer will be a beotch and cause any delays she can.....
i was "fired", but i was told the reason for termination won't stop me from getting unemployment. i know she will do anything she can though so we'll see

If they do they will call you and set up an interview with you take your side and then the employer side and go from there.

You don't have a career center to go to check in every 4 weeks??? Here we have to check in every 4 weeks. The reason you can't go to school is you have to be open avablitily to work. I guess with school you can't open to go to school.

Here in IN, if your laid off and go back to school to further your education in the field that you lost your job in, then you can go to school full time, claim your unemployment without looking for a job for 2 years. If you go back to school for a new or different field, then you still have to show that you are currently searching for a job.

there is no further education for what i was doing. i was a caregiver.
but i'm also a 40 year old single mother with VERY little work experience and absolutely no skills! :sad2:

Why the delay in payment? I collected here in Va and got it right away. Well maybe not right away but not 5 or 6 weeks. :(

Here I think you can go to school BUT it can't interfere with job searching or if you do get a job that is cool in NY they want you to finish school.

You are lucky

In Illinois, going to school cannot interfere with a potential job schedule that is based on your previous job. For example, I worked a 9-5 job before I was laid off. I cannot take morning or afternoon classes, as that would interfere with another 9-5 job. If I worked the evening shift, I could not take night class, etc.

Not that anybody in Illinois follows these rules, anyway... :rolleyes1
