Question about transferring points

I'm now thinking that in order to get the points I need for my June 29-July 3 trip to HHI, I should rent points to be transferred into my account. This way, I can deal with the waitlist myself without involving another member and his/her points. I'm hoping you all can give me some tips about how best to handle this: I know the other member's resort won't matter; I can pretty much rent from any resort, right? Does use year transfer automatically or do I have to specify which use year I want it in. If it matters, my use year is August. I think that means that if I get the points transferred to the current use year and I DON'T get the reservation, I'll be out the points, right? I don't think I have any other options, though, do I?

The home resort won't matter but the use year of the points that you transfer in remains what it was. It doesn't change to the use year of your contract.

So if their use year is December, the points will be transferred to me as December 2003 points and won't expire until December 2004? Is that right?

Jessica, please take a look at the link in my sig. there's a long list covering various aspects about transferring points.

the specific answer to your last question can be found in section "h", which i'll also quote here for you:
If the Transferrer and Recipient do not have matching Use Years, then the Recipient will not have a full year (12mos) of use out of the Transferred Points. This is because when the Transfer is performed, MS will ask the Recipient to choose which Use Year they want the points Transferred into. Example: Transferrer has a Sep UY, Recipient has a Apr UY. If the transfer is done today Jan04, and the Transferror wants to Transfer out Sep03 points, then the Recipient has a choice to receive points into their Apr03 UY (making the points only valid from 9/1/03 to 3/31/04) OR their Apr04 UY (making the points only valid from 4/1/04 to 8/31/04).
if you have any other questions, let me know!

smart idea, renting points, and getting out of that borrowing before it was to late, good luck and happy vacationing :sunny:

Disneyberry,

I have had points transferred into my account which were from a different use year and never was it asked, what use year did I want the points transferred into? This may be another one of those "it depends on who you talk to at Disney" things. I have a print out from Disney of my point useage and it shows the transferred points and clearly indicates that their use year was different than mine. The transferred points retained their original use year as the rules stated they would do. Even if what you are saying is now the case, wouldn't the fact that transferred points can be banked make this a non issue anyway?

Well, not necessarily. At least not in my case. If the points are transferred into my Aug 2003 use year, my last day for banking 25% is May 31 (or something). If I'm still on the waitlist beyond then and it turns out I don't get my reservation, I'm out those points because its too late to bank them.

I still think this is the way to go for me. I think I'll just have to be prepared for MS to either leave them as the transferer's UY or ask me which use year of mine to add them to. Now I just need to find someone to transfer me the points...

Disneyberry, I'm looking forward to reading your link on transferring points. Thanks for the resource.

HBC, i don't have experience with having points transferred IN, but when i worked with a few other members to transfer points OUT from my account into theirs, MS did mention to me that we should indicate which Use Year the recipient wants them to be in.

more specifically, the MS agents who entered the transfer info into the computer asked me, "when did the other member plan on using the points?" and i would tell them what month they planned on going. that allows MS to make sure that the points are transferred into the right Use Year so that the recipient can actually use those points without any problems.

again, i don't know from first hand experience, but from what some other DISers have mentioned before, they reported that it seemed very difficult to get MS to allow a full 12 months of use out of transferred points when the 2 members involved have different Use Years.

Jessica, for your example, if someone transfers Dec03 points to you, and you planned on going on a trip this July, yes you should request to receive the points into your Aug03 Use Year.

that would mean the points would be valid from 12/1/03 (already passed) until 7/31/04. they should technically be also valid for any trips that fall between 8/1/04 and 11/30/04, however you might have to push the issue with MS.

i would really love to hear if anyone has recent first hand experience regarding a situation like that though.

plus, we still have not really heard about anyone actually banking transferred points yet. i'd love to hear experiences about that too. all we know is that it's technically allowed. but i wonder what the actual logistics are? what MS's actual practices are regarding banking transferred points. for instance:
1) whose banking deadlines do they follow? i always thought that MS should follow the banking deadlines of the original owner (so Jessica, the 100% banking deadline for Dec UYs is the end of May)...
2) how do they calculate banking percentages? if the recipient had already previously banked 100% of their own points, and then they received some extra transferred in points... what is the number that MS uses to calculate percentages? can they still bank the transferred points even though they banked 100% of their points already?
since these more minor transfer issues have not been defined in writing anywhere... we have no way of knowing.

anyway, sorry that's a lot of me wondering out loud at 3am... heh.

But still really good for 3:00 A.M. Thanks for the reply. It still seems to me to be "it depends on who you talk to" thing. Whenever DVC folks invoke unwritten rules, I worry.

I had a transfer in about 11 months ago. I have a September use year and the person transferring in had an April use year. They were April 2003 points. My use year began on September 2003. I used them for a reservation for New Year's 2004 time period without any problem.

The problem I did have was that they were originally BCV points and they were transferred into my master contract, which is VWL. So when I called to make a reservation at the BCV, since it was still outside the 7 month window I was told no. In the transfer, the points lost their identity and became VWL points. I ended up spending about 45 minutes on the phone talking to a couple of different people to fix the problem.

Has anyone else had a transfer in?

HBC
