Question about Transferring Points

Hi, I was wondering,

I know I have read if you are not a DVC member and you rent points from someone there is a level of risk that the person you are renting from may take your money and not make your reservation, or make it and than cancel before your arrive..

So... If you are a DVC owner and you need more points one year, you go on the boards and find someone to transfer you some points.. Is there the same level of risk?

Or because you are both DVC members can they still change the reservation after you have made it??

The risk in a transfer has do to with the payment mostly, because once the transfer takes place the points are yours. Most members will require payment in full before transfering. Just be cautious and get references. Written contracts are helpful also. Also, MS will allow a conference call to complete a transfer and that is nice for all parties involved. Remember, only one transfer in or out per use year is allowed.

You might read up on on renting and transfers on the rent/trade board. There is a lot of good info there. I read it and learned a lot when I wanted to transfer some points to cover the cash cost of a Disney cruise.

Just remember, DVC does not allow making transfers for any type of compensation.

That's up for interpretation--some contracts mention renting points, so who knows if Disney is for or against??

As for renting points, there have been thousands of transactions, and I have only heard of one horror story, so I think renters are pretty safe. The big problem with renting out points, though, happens to be receiving the money on time. I rented points out 5 years out of the 9 I have owned DVC, and I have had one person tried to scam me, but overall, people on both sides are honest and friendly.:wizard:

This is one of the few things I do not believe is up for interpretation in the POS (both site specific and multilocation). They all have clear wording which prohibits transferring for any form of compensation. Not too much wiggle room there.

I agree the renting clauses have less clarity.

JMHO, YMMV.

The wording is clear, the enforcement is non existent and there is likely no way to really enforce it other than eliminating transfers.

For the OP, the real difference between renting points (really a reservation) and transferring points is in the control of the reservation.

If you receive a transfer of points, as a DVC memebr you can use them to make any reservation within the applicable rules. If you need to cancel or modify a reservation after the transfer, you do this yourself and have all the flexibility (of lack thereof) that applies to any other DVC reservation.

If you rent points, the owner of the DVC points is the only one who can make a reservation with those points. As a result, there is greater risk in renting because the owner of the points can change or cancel the reservation without notice. Also, there is usually less flexibility if you need to change or modify the reservation, and it may depend on the good will of the party renting the points and the flexibility they have given DVC's banking and borrowing rules.

But, as others have noted, most transfers and rentals go off without a hitch.
