Question about the H1N1 Shot

My kids got their first H1N1 shot last month and had no adverse reactions. They were due to get the second dose today, but my inept pediatrician didn't save any doses back for the kids that needed second shots, so they won't be able to get the second dose because H1N1 shot are NOWHERE to be found. I hope one dose is better than no doses.

This happened to us with the mist. I got a call 2 days before my oldest 2 son's 2nd appt. I was a little upset that they didn't keep enough on hand for appts already made.

My youngest got the shot when he went in for his 2nd flu (he got his first seasonal flu at 6 months) and they were only giving shot to under 2 and he got one of the last doses. They will call me when they get more in..

Of course they are running shot clinics around here, but none of the pedi's have it. I work in a nursing home and we don't even have it, yet. the clinics are for kids and we've been told if they've had nasal spray, they should stick with that and not the shot for the 2nd dose. then others have been told it was ok. UGH.

But...to answer OP's question, no adverse reactions from any of my kids!

I got a fever the next day. Pretty high with chills. But I was OK the day after that.

DD3 gets hers tomorrow. We'll see how that goes!

My 6 year old had the first dose last night (dead virus in shot form not mist) and she is fine so far. They told her she needs another dose in 28 days. I didn't get it for my 15 month old because she is allergic to eggs (they wouldn't do it anyway).

I have to change my reply. My 6 year old got the shot Tuesday night and yesterday in the afternoon she complained she was really tired (which she never does). She went to lay down and she had a low fever. Today she doesn't have a fever but is coughing a bit, has a runny nose and her eyes look droopy. Not sure if its related to the shot but thought I'd mention.

I had my shot Wednesday afternoon, felt absolutely fine, however, woke up Thursday morning and was sick, that carried on all morning, had a pretty high fever, shivers, sweating, headache, achey joints, vomitting stopped during the early afternoon, today woke up feeling horrible, couldn't get out of bed as was so 'tired', still had a fever on and off, achey/weak, am finally starting to feel quite a bit better now, although very 'tired'. My arm has a big red lump the size of an egg.

I've been having the seasonal flu shot for about 20 years and have never had such a reaction.

I was finally able to get my DS 4 the shot on Tuesday. He had to have the shot cause he has lots of allergies and was told the mist would not be a good idea for him. He said it didn't hurt and he never complained of soreness. He was a bit hyper the rest of the evening, but it could of been that he had a big day and was over stimulated, I'll never know. If it is ever is offered to adults in this area I don't know if I will get it, because I have had 2 bad reactions to the regular flu shot and I think I may be done with flu shots. But my son is fine. I was just glad I was finally able to get it for him.

What is in the mist that he is allergic to but not in the shot?

Mine got them....12, 7 and 5.....no issues at all. I also got mine and no problems.

What is in the mist that he is allergic to but not in the shot?

There is nothing in the mist he is allergic to, but he has so many seasonal and other type allergies that he is constantly stuffed up or has a runny nose that they were worried that the mist would not get up his nose enough and thought the shot wold be better for him.

Thanks! I wasn't sure what the difference would be but this makes sense.

Just an update everyone. The kids did get the H1N1 on Tuesday. They did not have the shot only the mist. Both kids got it, no side effects and all is well.

Thanks everyone for their comments. I would like to mention that the doctor did not tell me that I needed to get my son another does of the mist in a month but because of someone mentioning here I asked about that and she said "Oh yes that is correct". So thank you again and I will following up on that in January, hopefully they will have it available for us.
