Hi! I'm new to this Board. I discovered the link to this board in the book "Unofficial Guide to WDW with Kids". I am going with my parents and five year old son to WDW in two weeks. I live three hours south of Orlando so we will be driving. Since my parents are footing the bill because this is a B-day present for my son, I am at their mercy (sort of speak). They decided not to stay on Disney property which I think is a mistake but they said they found a nice condo off property. I'm somewhat concerned because the last time I took my son to Disney he was three and freaked out in the Bear Jamboree. He also didn't take well to the rides. I am wondering what rides would be best for him. He loves Micky Mouse and the other characters so I guess it would probably be a good idea to go to character lunches/dinners. Any advice?

Thanks!

Hi my son does not really like the characters that much either. A good place to see goofy, mickey, chip and dale up close and afar is to make a reservation at chef mickeys located in the Contemporay hotel. It is a breakfast buffet and the characters walk through the restaurant and come to your table for pics or autographs but if your child seems hesitant they will just wave. It was a lot of fun. I hope this helps. :bounce:

We just got back a week ago from our first trip to Disney. It was FANTASTC! My advice to you Character meals, character meals, character meals. My kids loved them. We did Chef Mickey's (awesome) Cinderellas Royal Table (Good) and Liberty Tree (Our very favorite). At Liberty Tree we had a "Magical Moment" and the kids got to meet the characters before the resturant opened and than our family got to open the resturant with the ringing of the liberty bell and a little speech. It was so cool! Chef Mickey was also a lot of fun the kids loved the charcters and the food was good. The royal table was nice my dd loved it but we felt very rushed. Make sure to make reservations, when we were there people were asking to make reservations for the week and couldn't get any. I think your son will like many of the rides, except maybe the rollercoasters. DS(9) rode everything DD(6) rode everything including rollercoasters and DD(2) rode all rides that didn't have a height restriction. You are going to have so much fun. Wish I was going back. Trying to talk DH in to going Christmas 2007. Wish me luck! princess:

First I'd say go ahead and enjoy being in the condo -- true it may not have some of the Disney magic/fluff, and you may have some more travel time -- but you'll probably really be more comfortable, not crowded, and it's really helpful to have some kitchen use. And you may have a lot shorter walk back to the condo at night, than you'd have at an onsite property (unless you were on the monorail).

Pretty much go at the pace of your son and see what he might like to do -- maybe start with Buzz Lightyear, or just the train around the park. It's great that he likes characters -- be sure to use PhotoPass a lot, some with all of you, and with some of him, and maybe switch off with each of the adults a few times (get a variety of photos). The Aladdin ride can be a good starter -- you don't have to go up high right away. He'll probably enjoy the Boneyard at AK, and the train out to Conservation Station. At Epcot -- go see Turtle Talk with Crush, and Spaceship Earth (DGS loves rollercoasters, but he asks to go on SE, because it goes sloooooooooow). Lights, Motors, Action at MGM (another place where ear protectors can be good) -- it's boring for me, but boys like it.

If the shows and fireworks are too loud for him -- get a pair of ear protectors (at hardware or sporting goods store) -- they seem big, but can help a kid have a happy experience. The last couple of trips with my DGS (at age 6), I took a stroller most days -- it was helpful for hauling along helpful stuff, and then he had a place to sit in the evenings for parades and fireworks (and sometimes he was just so tuckered he needed it).

Hopefully your folks won't feel pressured to max out on "doing" everything, esp rides -- there's lots to see and do without the rides. Visit the area in the town hall on main street behind the kodak center -- fun place to take some photos and see old cartoons.

Have a wonderful time -- you will create some great memories!

My daughter(6) hates fireworks, so we brought her cd player from home w/ her favorite cd. Worked great.

Does he like Power Rangers? MGM have a meet 'n greet several times a day where they sign autographs and pose for pictures. My DS loved this! Also, the Buzz Lightyear ride at MK is great! The rest depends on each child. Our first was never one to take chances. Our youngest, however, is our little daredevil. So, the sky's the limit. Be careful of dark shows and rides though. We bought a very small clip on flashlight for him to take and turn on pointing towards the floor is he got scared at all. It really worked, and it wasn't so bright where it bothered other guests. Have fun!

Thanks for all the quick replies!!!

I feel really welcome here. I even met a fellow Floridian who lives one town over from me. How weird is that!!!

I spoke to my parents today about the upcoming trip. I suggested we make reservations at Chef Mickey for either breakfast or dinner. My dad said he would go online to make reservations. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

We are only going for the weekend (leaving Friday and returning on Sunday) as we only plan to go to the Magic Kingdom. I wish we were going for the entire week but this is on my parents dime so I can't complain. At least we are going. It's their B-day present for my five year old son.

Oh, I took another one of the suggestions and purchased a child CD player so my son can listen to his favorite CDs in the car and during the fireworks.

Thanks!

Ilana

Welcome to the DIS! We just took DD5 on her first trip, after waiting for years for her not to be afraid of dressed up characters. At preschool, they used to have a character come during book week,(like Clifford or Pooh) and they scared her to death even when she was 4. So, we waited and I'm glad we did. I think there's something about being 5, she realized that it was people dressed up and we told her they all loved kids and meeting them all day is why they worked at Disney. So maybe your DS5 will have hit this turning point. DD5 also wouldn't ride anything but the carousel and TINY slow rides at the local fair, until this past summer. He may surprise you with what he's willing to ride! We still didn't do anything like a rollercoaster or Splash Mountain because it just looked too intimidating to DD.

We stayed offsite also, and I really enjoyed having the extra room of a suite, compared to what we could have afforded onsite. I think it's wonderful that your parents can go with you and your child. My parents cannot travel that far or walk that far anymore due to health problems and being in their late 70's. Enjoy the time together and maybe take some time for just you and DS, too. The driving wasn't bad and we even got waved through for free parking on our last day there! YOMD I guess!

Hope you have a great trip! :)

We went late last December, and at the time my son was 4 1/2 and a huge Buzz Lightyear fanatic. However, he was scared of the Buzz Lightyear ride. He thought it was too dark and was freaked by the big Zorg in the beginning of the ride (by 7 & 10 year olds loved it). He also wouldn't touch the Peter Pan ride (again too dark).

He did love It's a Small World, The Barnstormer,Thundercreek Railroad, Winnie the Pooh and the Jungle Cruise at MK; Lights, Motors, Action & Indiana Jones at MGM; and Turtle Talk with Crush at Epcot (all three of my kids got involved).

My advice would be to avoid the darker rides and not too push him to try things he's not ready to. That will just ruin your trip!

Have fun!
Nikita

My son is 5. He loves, loves, loves the characters. We spend a lot of time getting pictures and autographs. He does not like any of the dark rides, I don't know if your son may have the same fear. The rides he does like at MK are Dumbo, Aladdin, Teacups, Goofy's Barnstormer roller coaster, the train, Tom Sawyers Island (especially "shooting" at BTMR from the fort), the grand prix, Swiss Family Robinson tree house, the Tiki Birds, the Jungle Cruise. He also likes to play in the Pooh play area, and to watch the parade.

ETA: When you have a car, staying offsite is not all that bad.
