We have never gone in the summer have only traveled in the slower times of the year ie: September, October, January. With my daughter entering high school next year was considering traveling when she was not in school. Our school ends June 9 and we would have to back home by the week of August 15.

Yup, that's pretty much peak summer season for Disney! I would try to get there right after she gets out of school, well before the July 4 crowds build up.

We have a similar dilemma with DD now an 8th grader. What we have done the last 3-4 years is schedule vacations around opportune windows in the school calendar when she and her brother won't have to miss AS MUCH school as if we were taking them out for a random week. For example, we have a three day break wrapped around the MLK holiday, which has become a great time for us to go.

We go every year the end of May/beginning of June. Next summer will be June 2-11. It can get interesting crowd wise, but if you've gone before you know what you want to see and what you want to do, which makes it much easier. LOL

One tip...go to walmart or whereever and buy yourselves some of those water bottle fans. We bought a WDW one a few years ago and it was 18 bucks for one. Yikes Since then we've bought a couple for 3 bucks each. The CMs still let you use their water/ice to fill up, especially of you ask nicely. :)
