Question about solid wall verandah

We booked a cat. 7 gty for our cruise Feb. 27. I just checked the DCL website and we have been upgraded to a cat. 4 (8092)! My only concern is that it will be a solid wall verandah instead of the plexiglass. We have only stayed in cabins with the plexiglass and I am worried about not being able to see the ocean while sitting on the verandah. I would appreciate hearing from those of you who have stayed in solid wall verandahs and get some perspective. Thanks!

Hi, Neighbor!:wave2: We had almost the exact same upgrade on our Wonder cruise - from a "secret veradah" room to 8094. I was worred about the solid wall, too, but it never bothered us a bit. We loved the extra space in the stateroom, and especially the location -- just steps away from a starcase to the buffet. it was like our own secret entrance - so easy to pop upstairs for a quick pastry in the morning or drink or snack. We didn't spend as much time as we expected in the room, so the wall was no big deal to us.

Here's our view of Nassau from the room.....

Thanks for the info and picture. We have stayed in 3 out of the 4 "secret verandah" rooms on the Magic and love the plexiglass so we can see the ocean. We booked this coming cruise a week ago and only cat. 7 gty was available so that is what we took. We love being aft so are excited that 8092 is aft but I am just not sure about the solid wall. Glad it didn't bother you. We are looking forward to having the extra space in a cat. 4, just hope my DH is not so excited that he will only stay in one in the future! Thanks again, and Go Colts!!

Does anyone else have any experience with a solid wall verandah? Thanks for sharing!

Prose, I am glad to here you liked the room. We were just assigned 8094 as a gty room and I'm glad to hear a positive review. I was also concerned about having a solid wall verandah.

Which one have you liked the best? Did you have any preference for the one on the 6th floor vs. 7th? Was there much difference in the view between the two different floors? I'm trying to decide between one on the 6th floor vs. the 7th for a cruise next year and appreciate nay insight you have. Thanks

My favorite room (5650) is a solid wall verandah. I am used to standing up to see the ocean so it doesn't bother me at all 5650 has a somewhat larger/deeper verandah so it's a really nice little area when I'm sitting down reading or listening to my iPod. I just love it.

dvcbrad,

We love deck 7 because it is closer to the secret staircase that leads to Topsiders. It is also closer to the aft quiet overlook deck. My husband prefers 7620 because he likes that side of the ship better, but I am fine with 7120. The view from deck 6 and deck 7 are about the same. Have fun planning and have a wonderful cruise!

Thanks for sharing! Since we have never stayed in a solid wall I am sure it will be very different but we are very excited about the extra space. I have to say, you guys are my heros for taking so many disney cruises! Next month will be number 9 for me and I wish we could afford to take more!

Cool, you'll only be one cruise away from Platinum Castaway Club membership! :thumbsup2

One warning about 5650...you get lots of vibration from the thrusters when the ship is docking. I am immune to it by now as I've spent so much time back there but others would notice it. Oddly enough, it will wake up hubby and I if it's not the "usual" vibration. We can tell just by listening to it whether the captain is having a hard time docking at CC.

We were upgraded from a Cat 8 GTY to one of the aft Cat 6's with the solid wall. Since it was a free balcony and for our particular cruise was about a $1,500 upgrade I couldn't complain...but I was disappointed that it wasn't the clear type. The railings are high so you have to stand to see over. And smaller children won't be able to see at all. We were smokers at the time so it came in handy for that...and to watch while we were docking...but because we couldn't SEE without standing we didn't really spend much time out there at all. We never used it to just sit & relax. Who wants to sit & look at a wall? DS was 8 at the time and we had to hold him up for him to see. Climbing on the flimsy plastic chairs & table was a big temptation for him. IF I were to PAY for a balcony I would want a clear one. Since we can't afford a "real" balcony we just book portholes or SPH rooms. Since you are a GTY you don't have much say in it tho.

ETA - being upgraded to the Cat 4 is a special bonus for you tho...I wouldn't turn THAT down!

I personally didn't like it. I wanted to sit down and watch the water but you had to stand to be able to see it. But I would definitely pefer it over no verandah at all.

We have two connecting 6Bs aft, which looks like a little deeper balcony on Deck 6 of the Dream.
I too was hesitant about getting the solid wall verandah since we always have plexiglass (don't usually sail DCL), but it was what we could "afford" using our DVC points. :goodvibes
The back cabin balconys look a little deeper but I guess we will just have to wait and see until the Dream comes out.
In regard to the SVR, do you book as an OV and get the Verandah? I wonder if they will have these on the Dream?
I may wait and put my points into the system, AFTER the ship sets sail and we know about the "secret" or lack of secret rooms.
Thanks.

Wow! Nice to see some other Indy DCL cruisers! :cheer2:

We're going to have a solid wall verandah on our next cruise since we've decided to try a HA room this time around. I'm in the group that's also wondering whether or not I'll like the solid as well as the plexiglass. My first thought it, no, since I like being able to sit and watch the water go by. That's obviously not going to be an option with the solid wall. I'll just have to wait and see how it all works out!
