Question about POR Stay

I have searched through the threads to see if I can find some help, but haven't had any luck. We are going next month and staying at POR (have been trying to switch to POFQ or CSR, but to no avail. FQ because it is smaller and CSR because we wanted to try something new this time). So, it looks like we will stay at POR (last time we stayed there was when D was 7 - she is almost 20 now).

After finally recovering from reoccuring bouts of plantar fascitis over the past few years, I now am being treated for a different problem (something involving the nerve on the top of my foot which is giving me pain in the two middle toes, but mostly on the ball of the foot). Tomorrow I go back to the doctor and will probably try a shot of cortisone (which scares the heck out of me - :scared1: ), but willing to try anything at this point.

I do not feel the need rent a ECV, as if I am wearing the right shoes/sneakers, it is manageable most days with extra doses of Advil. But, with all of the extra walking I will be doing over the 5 days, I wanted to try to minimize the walking to and from the bus stops and to the dining facility in the resort.

So, my question is, what do you think the best buildings would be to put in a request for either at the Mansions or AB? I know that you are not guaranteed anything, but it will be worth a try. We are not going to rent a car this trip, as we are trying to keep our costs down (darn that college tuition - LOL) as much as we can. I know that I can count on my DIS board experts for some help!

Thanks in advance and have a great day!

I wish I could remember the building number, but I would suggest AB for proximity to the food court/main bus stop. There's a building that has a direct paved path to both areas that would really cut down on your walking at the resort.---Kathy

Here's a link to the map of POR.
Building 14 is the one that is closest to the check in/shop/food court.

Some of the other buildings might actually be closer to the bus stops than that, depending on just where you end up in the building. Also, keep in mind that only the Mansions have elevators. And, the elevators are toward the middle of the building, so getting to one might mean an extra walk.

I'm not positive, but PO might have a system where certain buildings are 'preferred' locations, which you need to reserve as a category and pay extra for. I know that CBR has that system, but I'm not sure if PO does also. People on the resort board would know that.

ALSO, I generally would advise against putting in a request for a building. If there are no rooms available there to assign you to, they won't know why you wanted that building and you may not get a building that meets your needs. I'd suggest saying what you want/need - "close to bus stop....close to food court." I you want to put in a building request, put the information about what you need as a second request. Room assigners have posted they try to meet requests if possible, but if they can't meet them all, they will assume whatever you listed first was what was most important to you.

I would encourage you to at least consider an ECV. We were at POR in Sept., and I have to say, the room location was a bit of a nightmare. We made reservations early, confirmed everything through special reservations, confirmed 24 hrs beforehand, and arrived to find out that we had been"upgraded" to the middle of nowhere. Over an hour later, a room suddenly appeared that was still nowhere near where we needed it, but at least next to a parking lot (and on the first floor, we have an ECV that even though we'd requested 1st floor for, we were initially put upstairs-and in AB, there are no elevators) we just had to drive everywhere. So we didn't actually see much of the resort, but oh well... Anyway, I just wouldn't depend on the room location, it might not go your way.

Thanks, everyone for the great advice. Still not sure what to do, but will see how things go the next few weeks with the foot situation. I think I am going to try the cortisone shot today and then see how many days it helps (if it does). I could always schedule another one for right before we leave.

My SIL has had the cortisone shot for her feet and said she had wonderful relief for months. Her situation is a bit different- she is heavy and has very little musculature on her feet so it's kind of like bones and skin hitting the pavement. This trip she did rent an ECV as the shots had worn off and she wasn't quite due for more. You can always see how you feel when you're there and decide whether to just use a manual chair for distances or rent an ECV to have a bit more independence. You might want to speak with special services and let them know you *might* need an ECV and thus request to be on the first floor at POR and in AB to be closer to the food court and first bus stop.---Kathy

I do not feel the need rent a ECV,

I just realized the almost 30 years of teaching students with dyxlexia have rubbed off on me - darn, those letter reversals - LOL

But, I did decide to take the cortisone shot yesterday and so far, it doesn't feel too much better, but Dr. said it will take a few days to make a noticeable difference (if it works). They also gave me a removable insert to put into my shoes to take the pressure off that area. If if does work, then I can have another shot before we leave next month, once I know how many days it lasts.
