Question about oil

If you say so I guess it must be so? Unfortunately, I don't agree.
46 years in the industry, just retired, 9 different media companies, NEVER had an owner dictate what went in my newscasts. Certainly there is a local editorial process on story selection based mostly on what people like you actually want to know about.
But again, I am talking about main stream media. I saw someone blasting "the media" for an article critical of the cruise industry. I tracked down the "article", it was someone's REDDIT post. THAT, is not the media. Nor are the infotainment channels like Fox and CNBC,

This is exactly true. The fact is the media today is exactly what we want it to be. We reward them with views and clicks. If hard facts/real journalism got the attention, we would see more of that. It's on us as a society that it is the way that it is.
Yes! Quite sad isn't it - people choosing to be ill-informed and ignorant?

Sounds like we need to qualify our definitions because as "main stream media", I think most people consider that Foxnews, CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, etc and not KDKA, WPXI, or WTAE (using Pittsburgh locals) if that is what you are calling media companies.

Well there is main stream media. CBS, NBC, and ABC. Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times.
There are the crossovers, Fox MSNBC, CNBC and these days CNN. A cross of some news and too much opinion.
I think people need to realize that Reddit, DIS Boards, Facebook, and NextDoor and the National Enqurier are neither.
I know some people don't want to think about whether the source of the information is credible.
And the most troubling group of people, people who don't pay any attention. We have a very dear friend who is 60 and have never made a habit of reading a paper or watching the news. She got a text alert about evacuations from a wildfire burning near her. She was shocked to learn it had been burning for a week and the big story for that time. And rising gas prices, she didn't even know who Putin was.

Another would be OneAmerica News but unfortunately this channel isn't carried by all/most cable companies. We used to get it with FiOS but we now use Xfinity, so we no longer get the channel. Too bad because this channel covered all the new and didn't devote all their time to only one or two stories.

I do think there is bias (control of stories being covered) on the news channels, there is a definite leaning one way or the other and the coverage of important news stories. Some channels cover certain stories extensively because the story supports the way they lean, and some channels spend little to no time on stories because it goes against the stories they like to cover or their point of view. When a channel gets it wrong and spends hours droning on about a story and later is comes to light that they had it all wrong you get little to no coverage of any correction of those erroneous stories. I could give examples of stories that have been beaten to death on some channels only to have it come out later to be miss reporting of the actual facts, in other words the stories were false. I won't do that here because I don't want to start a firestorm and get the thread locked.

This is my opinion, and you can agree or disagree. It doesn't matter to me, but I do think there are plenty of examples that support my believes if one wants to look.

I think you can frame your examples without violating any DIS board rules. I think Dan Rather and Brian Williams terminations are examples of the main stream media not tolerating getting things wrong.

You've been lucky enough never to have had Sinclair as an owner then. Or at least not in the last few years.
I worked for Sinclair for 10 years. They sold us in 2005 so not the last few years. Our station, and our sister station in Columbus were purchased at the same time. Until Sinclair bought us, none of their stations did news, so yes, a different time.

The high school boy from KY, another would be the teen accused of murder during riot in WI. These are just two examples, there are many more but I'm not going to go there. I think if you have been in the industry as long as you have you can figure it out. I will agree that 46 years ago it wasn't like it is today. Now that we have news channels on 24/7 they have to fill up that time with something so there are a lot of opinion pieces rather than reporting on the actual news and what is factually known to be correct.

I would hope that we could at least agree that there is a definite leaning to the L or R in the different news channels. Depending on your point of view will lead you to your news channel of choice. I'm not saying that either way is 100% correct or accurate. What I am saying is that people get their news from one source or another and their views are colored by what they watch, listen to, read, hear from others and what they witness personally. The media has a huge influence on people and what they think, hence I believe that he who controls the media controls the masses.

I am not familiar with the two examples you cite.
Again, I would argue that is a channel has a political leaning, it ISN'T a NEWS channel.
I would say the "life experience" level of people assembling the news has plunged and that has an impact on what stories are covered. When I got in the business in 1975 the newsroom was mostly people my parents age. When I exited last year the newsroom was mostly people younger than my children, under age 30 in many cases. I was shocked when my former employer did a story on the fact that you have to get a license for your dog. People making the decisions apparently were too young to know that. One of them adopted a shelter dog a year before and were shocked when they got a bill for a dog license renewal! Maybe that is regional too, I had a dog in the 1960's as a kid and yes he had to have shots and a license every year.

If you do a google search you can find the stories although on the first one example I didn't give enough information, I should have said "high school boy from KY in DC".

May I ask what channels you do consider to be news channels?

NBC, CBS and ABC. 40 years ago I used to watch CNN but they seem to have lost their way. Especially Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon's shows.

I found an NPR article. Not sure why that was even news worthy. An allegedly confrontation between two people that apparently triggered no official investigation, no injuries, no criminal prosecution, but some hurt feelings and poor choices.
