Question about monetary gifts for kids

My DD is 2 and one of the non toy gifts we have really enjoyed is a magazine subscription! The one she gets now is from the WWF and it is a magazine filled with animals. She loves it! I also have used some of the money she received to pay for an art class that she really enjoys.

My grandmother bought us bonds when we turned 18 and when we graduated. If I wait the 30 years to cash them in, I will be almost 50! 30 years is a long time to wait for a gift.

You don't have to hold a bond till full maturity. You only have to hold it for a minimum of 6 months, then you can cash it in for the cash value paid (usually $25 on a $50 bond) plus any interest accrued in that holding period.

Since we are talking about receiving gifts as well as giving gifts what I really would like is for the family to stop buying gifts like toys. My inlaws have a 100.00 a family member limit. We as adults know this. What I really wish they would give would be a zoo membership (110.00 for the family) we buy one every year so this would be a SUPER gift. Museum of science and industry membership (150.00 for the year for the family) a summer pass to the water park (85.00 per person) all well within the known budget and used for longer than a few weeks like toys. They give gift subscriptions to Highlight magazine and the kids LOVE it. It comes all year and they each have one so they each get their own mail. I like getting magazines too and so I appreciate getting gift subscriptions as well. Some of the magazines have sales for 5.00 for the year! Anyways just my wish and maybe a idea for others that are trying to figure out what to give. Oh and my kids and I love when they receive movie money. THey are gift certs to the local movie theater. Books are always appreciated as well and they tend to be costly.
