Question about ipod or mp3 player

Hi everyone,
We use i-tunes for downloads and my question is, can I only transfer i-tunes to an ipod or can I use an mp3 player. My daughter wants an mp3 player for Christmas, but I think someone once told me that I would have to use an ipod.
Can I put CD's onto i-tunes and transfer them to an ipod?
I am really not computer savey and don't want to purchase the wrong thing!

itunes will import MP3 files

Yes. When you put a music CD into a computer that has itunes running, itunes will automatically ask if you want to import.

And just to clarify a little, iTunes will interpret and be able to use .mp3 files (and subsequently transfer them to your iPod), but you will not be able to use iTunes to transfer files to a non-iPod mp3 player, if that makes sense. iTunes only works with iPods. There's other software out there that you can use with other mp3 players, but I don't know anything about any of those programs because the only mp3 players I've ever had have been iPods. Hope that helps a little.
