My father in law has been very ill and is in the hospital. We just found out today that he has cancer and its spread throughout his body. We are still waiting to hear the prognosis from the doctors. We were booked on the March 19th cruise and will most likely need to cancel now. Will this be covered with our trip insurance?
I, too, am going through the same situation. I bought the
DCL insurance and just checked the policy. It reads:
Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation
We will pay a Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation Benefit up to
the amount in the Schedule if you are prevented from taking
your Covered Trip due to your,
an Immediate Family Member’s,
or Traveling Companion’s, Sickness, Injury, or death or Other
Covered Events as defined, that occur(s) before departure on
your Covered Trip. The Sickness or Injury must: a) commence
while your coverage is in effect under the Policy; b) require the
examination and treatment by a Physician at the time the Covered
Trip is canceled; and c) in the written opinion of the treating
Physician, be so disabling as to prevent you from taking your
Covered Trip;
or in the case of a non-traveling Immediate Family
Member, be life threatening, or so severe as to require your care.
Later in the policy is does exclude pre-existing conditions. Therefore I think timing is important. In my personal situation, we purchased the cruise and insurance in Nov 2014 for a cruise in April 2016. My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2015 and in the last week her health has worsened. Therefore the way I read the policy, if she were to pass away right before or during the cruise or if we have a doctor state that my care is needed, the cost of the cruise should be covered if we cancel. Our plane tickets were not purchased through Disney so we would be out those costs but that not the large part of the expense.
The policy also states that if you have the insurance through DCL and for some reason the claim is denied, Disney will give you a credit for 75% which would be good for 1 year from the date of issuance of the credit.
Hope this helps and I hope your situation goes well.
