My father in law has been very ill and is in the hospital. We just found out today that he has cancer and its spread throughout his body. We are still waiting to hear the prognosis from the doctors. We were booked on the March 19th cruise and will most likely need to cancel now. Will this be covered with our trip insurance?

Maybe. You'd have to check your specific policy to see what's covered.

I agree with the Shmoo. Especially if he is not part of the traveling party. I hope you find comfort and good news.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father-in-law. I hope you can cancel with no penalty so you can focus on your family.

Exactly what the PP said - Check your insurance policy. Unfortunately, I believe most policies only consider emergencies or illness involving the immediate family, especially if the individual was not in your travel party. But there are various levels of coverage. Do take the time to read the fine print, as it may be covered.

I am also in the same position, my cruise is in June and I found out that my father has cancer last week, his prognosis is not good. He will not recover. We are in a waiting period. I understand the feelings that you are going through. Tonight is going to be tough, because the grief starts. Just let the feelings come and live day to day. If you want to PM me, just to vent or talk you may.

I, too, am going through the same situation. I bought the DCL insurance and just checked the policy. It reads:

Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation
We will pay a Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation Benefit up to
the amount in the Schedule if you are prevented from taking
your Covered Trip due to your, an Immediate Family Member’s,
or Traveling Companion’s, Sickness, Injury, or death or Other
Covered Events as defined, that occur(s) before departure on
your Covered Trip. The Sickness or Injury must: a) commence
while your coverage is in effect under the Policy; b) require the
examination and treatment by a Physician at the time the Covered
Trip is canceled; and c) in the written opinion of the treating
Physician, be so disabling as to prevent you from taking your
Covered Trip; or in the case of a non-traveling Immediate Family
Member, be life threatening, or so severe as to require your care
.

Later in the policy is does exclude pre-existing conditions. Therefore I think timing is important. In my personal situation, we purchased the cruise and insurance in Nov 2014 for a cruise in April 2016. My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2015 and in the last week her health has worsened. Therefore the way I read the policy, if she were to pass away right before or during the cruise or if we have a doctor state that my care is needed, the cost of the cruise should be covered if we cancel. Our plane tickets were not purchased through Disney so we would be out those costs but that not the large part of the expense.

The policy also states that if you have the insurance through DCL and for some reason the claim is denied, Disney will give you a credit for 75% which would be good for 1 year from the date of issuance of the credit.

Hope this helps and I hope your situation goes well.

I amso sorry to all of you going through this. Question: if the Father in Law is the Father of someone traveling, wouldnt that be considered immediate family?

I went through the same with my mother (she passed in 2006).

Just wanted to say to all of you going through this that: I hope your insurance will cover it ...

And I wish you the best (and lots of courage).

My thoughts are with you.

To those going through this terrible time, I want to send my thoughts and prayers. I know all the arrangements, the changing plans, the money, etc. are real concerns. Contact the travel insurance companies to advise you. They will tell you what's what. I would think a parent is an immediate family member. Just my opinion. More importantly though, don't waste a single moment that you have left. Down the road these things won't matter. The time will. I lost my brother suddenly just this past November to a stroke. He and I were so very much a part of one another. I can tell you there is no amount I wouldn't give, nothing I wouldn't do, just to have one more moment. There could never be enough. Thoughts and prayers.

I want to thank all who offered thoughts and prayers. It means a lot. After I found out about my father, I checked my insurance and it does cover what I need it to cover. My cruise is at the end of June so I have a little more time.
