My parents just purchased DVC for the family as one of our Christmas presents so i am very new to this but i have a couple questions on the benefits. My name is on the deed so i am an official owner but since the membership is shared with my parents and my brother i will not be staying on DVC points every time i visit (which now is about 2 times per year 10-12 nights each time). If I am staying on Disney property but am not staying on my points, do I still have the option to get into the Top of the World lounge and/or pool hop or are those benefits only available to me when i am staying on my points? Thanks in advance!!

You can visit the top of the world lounge when not staying at DVC you just show your membership card, there are however certain nights you need to be staying at BLT like New Year's Eve. Not sure about pool hopping.

DVC member perks, such as pool hopping, are only available when you are using your points. A combination of your MB and membership card are used to validate that you are using your points in many instances.

Details are spelled out online, so you can read up when you get your access. As you can see, there are different requirements for different perks; you must be staying on your points in order to pool hop, and you must be staying on site (in a hotel, resort, or villa) to access the Top of the World Lounge. I believe there are some benefits that just require a points stay, but not necessarily your own points.

The bottom line is that there are published policies but it is up to the CM that you are dealing with. We have been given perks and discounts when we shouldn't have and other times you have to insist on receiving the perk or discount per policy.

Some locations honor the DVC discounts even though their store or restaurant isn't on the published list.

The most important thing to understand about "perks" is that they are not guaranteed. They can and do change from time to time -- so something you really enjoy this year may not be available next year. Or the opposite -- you might get a pleasant surprise.
