Hi DISers! First, I apologize for being missing in action for a long time from these threads, I sure missed everyone! But being a FT mom/student/employee is quite time consuming :p

Now DH and I are having a bday party for our DD in May (2mos early, since DH is going on 6mos deployment in June and will miss her real bday). I had this idea for a "bouquet party". I will explain. It's mostly going to be my relatives at this party, and none of our families have small children so I didn't want to have a kiddie-themed party, but I still wanted it to be cute and fun. Last year we had a luau, which was a total success.

This bouquet party is going to be a theme of flowers, and I wanted to invite everyone to bring a bouquet of flowers. Big or small, or plucked right from your yard...whatever. And then after everyone's brought their flowers, we'd have this big beautiful assortment of flowers. So I would tie up a nice bouquet with ribbon or something nice, and then everyone gets to take home a cute bouquet.

Now is this a good or bad idea? My mother thinks it's tacky to ask people to bring something, since they're already going to bring a gift. But everyone else I've asked thinks it's a nice idea. What do you think? Your comments would help a lot! I hope this made sense...

I think it's a great idea! I don't think it's tacky to ask people to bring stuff when it is part of the theme. People always ask what can I bring, and most really like to be included in the prep and feel a part of it all. Good Luck!

I think it's a great idea, but at the same time understand your moms point of view. I would just buy my own flowers. You can buy gerber daisies and tie them up nicely or even have the flowers scattered around as centerpieces and have each guest/family take home one of them.
Since you are having a flower theme, I would go along with spring colors. There are alot of pastels out there since Easter is right around the corner.
Although your daughter is the only child, I would think that your guests will understand it if there were some child touches to the party. Nothing like a total themed out party, but with some games and such that your daugther will be able to play, and maybe some of the adults can join in-bobbing of apples, donut eatting contest-I'm sure your daughter will be laughing when she sees how silly the adults are.

I like the idea but I would word the invitation so the bringing of the bouquet was optional. Something along the lines of "We're introducing DD NAME to the beauty of flowers, if possible please bring a bouget of your favorite flowers. Thanks"

Then I would buy about 5-10 bouqets myself to have handy in case some folks didn't bring the flowers. You could check local supermarkets for sales (I know here Albertson's and Walmart always have cheap prices and good selections) or you could try here Greenhouse Express

Sounds like fun and a great way to share the day, flowers last a while so all week long the guests of your party will remember it.

I think it sounds like a cute idea. I'd bring a bouquet if I was invited.

I love the idea! Doesn't sound at all tacky to me, it sounds fun and festive! :)

Just an idea, but maybe ask each person to bring one flower (their favorite) and then make a bouquet with all the flowers brought. You could supply the vase and baby's breath (or other filler.)

It would be interesting to see what each person brings and your daughter would, hopefully, be able to see lots of different types of flowers.

Lori P. :)

edited for spelling....LOL

I seem to be in the minority here..but oh well....

since it's your daughter's birthday shouldn't it be kid themed...why should she not have a kid party just because no other kids willl be there..., wouldn't your guests understand the party is FOR HER...

I agree....my daughter had a kids party and an adult party...the kids party she wanted poke mon and the adult party was a princess party...even though it was an adult party it was still her birthday party and I wanted it to reflect her.

I'm sorry! I should have made it more clear. Of course we'll have kiddie stuff for her to do: birthday cake, balloons, some games (flower hunt... like an egg hunt!) and party favors. In no kiddie theme, I meant no Barbie, Barney, etc... she's not really into those things yet since we don't let her watch a lot of TV. I just wanted to make sure that I involved everyone in celebrating her birthday. She loves flowers, and now that it's almost spring time I thought it would be perfect...

I think I'm going to supply a good assortment of flowers, and just add that anyone is welcome to add their favorite flowers to the bouquet.

Last year we had a luau, had a kiddie pool in the back yard, leis, goodie bags but I made sure to make it fun for everyone and it was a success. I just wanted to do something similar this year but with a different theme. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, much appreciated!

Very neat idea, Jenny, I like it. And your new picture of Trinity is so darn cute. ::MinnieMo

Funny, I was just doing a search to get your profile to send you a PM to say hello, etc, having not seen you in ages, and did a search for last post, and here you are, today!!! :cool1:

And another DIS meet, end of April time.

In case you need a couple of cake ideas...

A dirt cake would fit in nicely with a flower theme.

Also - I have heard of using flower pots for cakes to!

Of course IMHO - I would never, never ever bake a cake for a family function. I just don't like to bake. Or cook...
