Question about bathroom vent installation

Our house was built in 1940 and doesn't have any sort of ventilation in the bathroom.

Which means we have to have an intake/exhaust window fan in the room year round or it smells like mildew in there.

Does anyone have any experience installing ventilation in a bathroom that is tiled to the ceiling? Is it going to be a p.i.t.a to do myself?

We've had it done -- but I didn't do it myself. There's vents that can be installed in the existing light fixture -- look for something like that. It still doesn't vent to the outside (which would have involved cutting a hole in the roof), but it does help with the steam and air circulation in the room.

We don't have a hanging light fixture.
I have a feeling this is going to be a huge job.

It's for the mildew, not the smell, RR

I find a burning Yankee Candle and/or a few squirts of lysol fresh linen scent kills those smells quite well

Is the bathroom on the first floor? Is there an attic over it? If so, it is a piece of cake. Go to www.DIY.com and you can find step by step instructions on how to do it. If you feel like you would rather let someone else do the work, it should cost no more than $250 including the fan if there are no complications (a fan/light combo will cost more). You do want to try and tie the fan into an outside exhaust. That moisture is bad on tile, but worse on inulation, sheetrock, and siding. Spend the extra time, and very little extra money to put an exhaust line to an exterior soffit, or directly out the side of the house. You will save money from costly repairs in the long run. My husband put ours in so it can't be all that difficult. There are people at Home Depot that can tell you how to do it but he just followed the directions on the box. It wasn't expensive...I'm sure it was less than $100 to do our 2 bathrooms.

I called home depot earlier, and they're going to have a class next month on bathroom repairs and will go over ventilation
I can't believe no one ever installed one in this house!
