Question about airport screening

I agree that we aren't any safer than before 9/11. I got tired of the TSA agents at MCO and got into the Clear program. I will be able to bypass security because I am considered a trusted traveler now. I use it for the first time on Friday.

The lines have been very long at security at MCO lately. I will be able to cut some time off at the airport.

I learned not to take it personally when I was singled out for the extended screenings.

Ah, I love when people complain about TSA!

A few notes-
If you ever are in a position at a TSA checkpoint that you feel should not be occuring, demand a supervisor. Then FILL OUT A WRITTEN COMPLAINT FORM ON THE SPOT and return it to the supervisor. If they tell you that they don't have any forms, they are lying to you and you should treat it as such. If the supervisor is not able to resolve the issue, ask them to call your airline's Ground Security Coordinator. These people are airline employees that tend to want to help customers a lot more than TSA does.

SSSS on your boarding pass is typically not random. It is much more likely to occur if:
-you purchased a one-way ticket
-you didn't pay with a credit card
-you're not a member of your airline's frequent flyer program
-your name, or a portion of it, is on some secret watch list.
Note that if you are under 12, you are exempt from SSSS. At the ticket counter, tell the ticket agent if anyone in your party is under 12. If you check in at a kiosk, TSA should be able to exempt you at the checkpoint, but TSA has never been known for doing what they're supposed to do.

Finally, if you think TSA should be disbanded (or at least made accountable to someone) :Pinkbounc , write your Congressperson and Senators.

Oh I fill out written compliants. I call the airport authorities etc... I generally just attempt to make their life as miserable as they make mine.

MCO is pretty bad. However, Nashville is actually where I started my complaining. Talk about folks on a power trip. "We are the TSA and WE are RUDE" is apparently the motto. I MADE A supervisor stand there with me and watch one TSA guy do his thing.. Didn't even matter to him that we were watching... He was just BERATING the senior citizen... On a high note, I never saw that TSA agent again...

MCO is typically pretty good (in comparison, I mean). If you want to look at a horrible TSA operation, fly into Newark sometime. Their screeners are on a powertrip like I've never seen before, and the supervisors/screening managers lie like rugs.

since when is under 12 exempt ? My DD hs been singled out several times when she was under 12. I have been sent to the special line at several airports and have never had a problem, I don't think what little pat down they have to do is embarrassing or invasive. I just wish they could do profiling and quit wasting time searching the grandma from the midwest. I think the security personnel is for the whole airport and not airline specific so it doesn't matter what airline you fly.

In my travel experiences since 9/11, about 150 times through the security check points, I have NEVER seen a TSA employee yell at anyone. IMO they do a very good job.

The times I have been searched have been related to one-way flights or flights where my frequent flyer number was not used when purchasing the ticket. Even if you think you will never fly the airline again, I would encourage enrolling in their FF program.

My only other comment is a roll of quarters causes problems for the screener operating the x-ray machine. I suggest breaking open the roll and putting the quarters in a zip lock bag.

My son would flip out if someone started patting him down.

Children are selected for these screenings, I have seen very young kids getting thoroughly searched a number of times. I have never heard of under 12s not being allowed to be screened.

Notthing can beat the pat down ALL passengers get at some international airports, such as Frankfurt. It was really unbelievable.

Here are a few airport tips for women...
Wear a bra with no underwire, or better yet, a sports bra (no metal hooks). I've seen this set off the metal detector.

This may be TMI, but I ALWAYS wear an underwire, and I don't have any problems because of it.

Yup! Most underwires these days are made of plastic, not metal.

Just a warning about MCO TSA agents:

Our family of 4, youngest ds (11) were all flagged with SSSS codes on our most recent return flight from MCO/DFW on Air Tran. It was our first and hopefully our last experience with the dreadful code. Horrifying and humiliating are not words that could possible describe the experience.

There were two TSA women officials, yelling at my family, 1 blonde woman yelled at my 11 yo son twice, the same blonde woman called my 18 yo son names. The boys were only trying to collect their things that these people had strewn all over the place. They unpacked everything we had with us on the same table area where other passenger bags were coming through the screening. TheTSA agents did not make any effort at all to make sure our belongings were secure. We're talking about 4 back packs full of stuff, 2 computers, 3 ipods, a Blackberry, watches, wallets, everything! My boys were a little worried about their ipods and DS's brand new laptop computer was just laying out on a table for anyone to come by and pick up. They didn't bother to tell us that our stuff also had to be swiped down before we could have it back. They just yelled at the boys when they tried to pick up their stuff like they always do when they come through the regular screening.

All the while, they had DH and I sequestered in a separate area, we could see and hear how they were talking to the boys and when we asked them to stop treating the boys that way, the same woman that was yelling at them then grabbed me by the arm, physically forced me into a chair, yelled at me to put my head in my lap and proceeded to frisk me.

I was in tears about how we were treated, my youngest ds (11) was scared to death, ds (18) looked like he was about to punch someone and DH was trying to get someone to explain what in the world was going on that warranted this horrifying treatment. I'm sure everyone around thought we must have surely been some kind of drug smuggling family that got caught the way they were carrying on. Talk about an abuse of authority! We were stunned beyond belief that this was happening, we typically fly for family vacations 2-3 times a year, and have flown in and out of MCO at least 20 times. Never has anything like this happened to us nor have we seen it taking place.

We have filed a formal complaint with TSA and Air Tran Airways. This was our first time to fly Air Tran, we've always flown American before. Welcome to discount flights! We'll stick with the regular fares if this is what you have to go through to save a few bucks!

The carrier you choose has nothing to do with the TSA screeners.

Those incidents truly are horrible and humiliating :furious:

safetymom, what is the "Clear" program????

Nevermind, I did a search and found it. It said "you're less likely to be singled out for a secondary search". Now if it guaranteed you wouldn't be, I might sign up for it. :scratchin

When I traveled alone with DD(6) in Oct Logan airport in Boston had this new machine where you stand in box like a shower stall and it blows a puff of air at your entire body. I think they use it to screen for explosives. They asked me if my DD would do it and I said NO WAY. She can be quite timid. They didn't have me do it either.

I went through one of these new screenings on my trip from Newark to Orlando just this month. You step into the stall on 2 foot pads and a mechanized voice talks you through the procedure. When it's done the gate opens and you go through.

I thought it was kind of nifty, but I think it might freak out a younger child.

I did this 3 years ago t CN tower in Canada. It seems like i did it someplace in Vegas to but not sure.

Well, the trip is over and everything went fine. They didn't even make my son take off his shoes.
