This might be a silly question that I should know the answer to. The rentals you can get through the Davids Disney Vacation rentals, do the studio rooms have a kitchen w/ a stove, fridge, etc?

A few weeks ago DH and myself stayed in a studio @ AKL and this included a microwave, mini fridge, sink, coffee maker and toaster. I beileve the one & two bedroom villa's have the full size kitchen ( at least I know the BWV do b/c we are staying in a one bedroom in Nov) this includes the regular size fridge, stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, washer & dryer and all the utenzils. :thumbsup2

Studios have undercounter refrigerators, so there is a small freezer section. No stoves/ovens, just a microwave. Studios never connect to other studios. They only connect to a one bedroom to make a two bedroom lockoff.

Most studios have a queen sized bed and a double sleeper sofa, except for OKW that has two queen beds. Studios are limited to four plus one under the age of three in the pack and play.

The BLT studio is the smallest of all the studios and is really only suited for two persons, plus maybe a baby.

Studios are very much like a standard hotel room, with a kitchenette. You'll have a small sink, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and a small fridge. There will be mugs, and paper plates and bowls, and plastic utensils.

If you want a full kitchen, with range, dishwasher, full-sized fridge, microwave, sink, dishes, pots, pans, utensils, glasses....then you'll need a one-bedroom villa. These also include a washer and dryer, separate bedroom with a king bed, a sleeper sofa in the living room (OKW, AKV and BLT also have a twin size sleeper chair), and a jacuzzi tub.

Sorry to jump in. We have a BLT studio rented for October. My DH is paraplegic and we have a 6 yr old. I'm really concerned now that Deb & Bill posted that they are best suited for only two people.

Will we have enough room especially with the wheelchair needing to be by the bed all the time?

Thanks,

Patricia

Not if you plan on having the sleeper sofa open. There is probably less than a foot between the bed and the wall and the bed and the sleeper sofa. The other side of the sleeper sofa is right up next to the window.

There's also not much room between the foot of the bed and the TV cabinet.

I should also add that Deb & Bill's comments apply to any of the DVC studios, except for OKW. The sleeper sofa takes up a lot of room when it's open, and there's really no room to move around, even without a wheelchair.

If you hadn't planned on getting a 1-bedroom villa, I think an OKW studio would be a much better fit for your group. There are two queen beds in every studio, and the room itself is larger, with a lot more open floor space.

Does anyone know if the handicapped accessible rooms are different? We rented points from a DVC member. I rented them from the rent/trade thread and not sure how we could change. We have to have a monorail resort due to DH's condition.

Bathrooms are modified, bed might be lower, but not a bigger room in any manner. Did the member you rented from know your husband's medical condition?

The buses are equipped to take wheelchairs.

In case you can't switch to another resort or a larger villa, you could always make the sofa up as a bed for your son....meaning, don't open it up into a sleeper. Or, bring an aerobed or similar air mattress. That would leave you with plenty of room for the wheelchair on that side of the bed.

Take a look at this photo gallery, you'll have an idea of what we're talking about with the sofabed. They don't have photos of it opened up, but you'll be able to get an idea of the limited space when it is open. It also appears that I was wrong about the space at the foot of the bed, it looks like there would be a decent amount of space there, so your husband could make the turn and get through.

Yikes. I am super concerned now. Our daughter would sleep on the sofa but I don't want that for her for a full week. DH's wheelchair is rigid and takes space. I would be afraid she would roll off and hit the chair.

Does anyone know if I would have the option to upgrade and pay cash once we arrive at BLT? If we rented the points and are not DVC member?

Sorry, that's not possible. Even members can't upgrade with cash on a points reservation.

I would suggest contacting the member you rented from, and explain the situation, and see if they're willing to try to change your reservation to a 1-bedroom. It may be tough to find a one-bedroom at BLT at this point, but they could put you on a waitlist.

As a PP said, Disney buses do accommodate wheelchairs (they have lifts), and carry wheelchair-bound passengers day in and day out. Check out our disABILITIES board, you'll find many, many people there who can share their experiences with buses, and how they compare to the monorail. You may find that OKW works as well for your family as BLT would, in terms of transportation.

There is a recent thread in either dvc mouscellaneous or DVc resorts that has a review from a family that stayed over a week in a dvc studio with 2 school age kids, a baby in a pack n play, and all the gear that comes along with that (stroller, etc). She said while tight they did fine. I would post the link but just haven't learned how yet. We toured BLT (we are already dvc members) and while the studio is a little on the small side and we have not stayed in it, honestly, I do believe you will be ok. The couch can be folded during the day. Could you move the wheelchair during the day over to the bed for him? There are videos on the studios on you tube. Maybe look at them and see if you think it will work. Good luck. Hope things work out for you all.

BLT is a bit tight. I'd recommend contacting the owner and seeing if it's possible to rent more points from them and get a 1 bedroom.

Alternately, and I know this isn't ideal at all, could you potentially move the chair yourself when your husband is in bed? That would mean he couldn't transfer independently (and I'm sure that would be frustrating), but it might give you enough room to open up the sofa bed, and I'm sure there would be room for it over by the door.

You could also try bringing an air mattress for your daughter and put it on the floor closer to the window, which should give enough room next to the bed for your husband's chair.

You might check the disABILITIES board and see if anyone there has any advice. I hope you can get it worked out!

No, a powerchair is not going to fit in the BLT studio with the sleeper sofa opened up. I think the poster you are talking about made do with a terrible situation and just decided she would make lemonade out of lemons. The poster with the husband in the powerchair is not a similar situation at all.

Deb, I do agree that with the sleepr down the chair won't fit in between the bed and couch. But there is enough room to store the chair and if she can move it to the side when the couch is up, it might work. Depending on her DH's level of injury, he also might be able to put the chair at the end of the bed and scoot himself down and self transfer when the sleeper is out. Unless it is just a massively huge chair, it should fit at the end of the bed, although it will be tight. I also like the air mattress suggestion by a PP. Just trying to help her make lemonade out of lemons as well. :goodvibes

we only been in one bedroom, and one of them had serious
damages from a scooter. i agree with bill & deb.

..another major concern that i think dvc need to be advised,
is the op intending to placed their whole family in a blt
studio, all 7 of them. the chances of them damaging the
unit is very high.

...i don't know dave from david's rentals. but from interacting
here, it is evident that he a nice guy and runs a top-notch
business. my guess , he informs /ask about room limits, but
i can see some trying to bypass those numbers.( i 've
never rented from him, so i am not sure how he can
cover when renters are doing damages or going over the limit.)

sure would never rent our points, to someone that is trying
to beat the system. and i hate to see the owner being
held responsible to what others are doing.

i see why the op wanted to know about the kitchen , since
they won't be able to claim all 7. the fact ,she is seeking
a studio for 7 does not match up. i hope dave is reading
their post.

Two Studios are usually cheaper than a 2 bedroom. The OP did not say they would all stay in one studio or even that her whole family was going.
