Queen Elizabeth funeral and looking forward

Um, that's actually incorrect, though those two are the only ones who served in active combat in wartime.

Charles did serve several years on active military duty, though he did so in peacetime. His sea duty lasted from 1971 through 1976. During that time, he served on a destroyer and two frigates, and in his final year of service commanded a minehunter. He also flew helicopters in the Royal Navy, and served on the carrier HMS Hermes as a pilot. William also served on active duty, but was never posted abroad. He served first in the Army for two years, then transferred to the RAF and served another 5 as a search-and-rescue pilot in the branch that is equivalent to our Coast Guard.

It's odd for Americans who are used to seeing veterans of all services wear their uniforms (or parts of their uniforms) on ceremonial occasions, but UK military regulations don't allow it unless you're still in the reserves. You can wear your decorations on civilian dress, but not the uniform. The reason that members of the Royal family get to do it is that they serve on service boards, and thus have honorary rank as long as they continue to do so. Due to their situations, Harry & Andrew no longer have those board appointments, and so, no uniforms.

Anne and Edward do have purely honorary appointments that come with board service. (Edward did briefly join the Royal Marines, but took the UK's standard option to voluntarily leave basic 6 weeks in. I'm actually rather surprised that he's appearing in uniform, because he has said in the past that he doesn't feel comfortable doing that. Probably the Queen's expressed wish.)

Yes, you are totally correct. In my head I was thinking active combat but wrote active service.

This is the live queue tracker if you want to go and pay respects in person. Yesterday the BBC had predicted the queue would reach Tower Bridge. It has gone past that now.

Oh, please.

Granted, those are crappy people posting, but they’re real feelings.

I think everyone has done a great job for 26 pages of staying respectful. It's not our job here to debate every comment made on Twitter and in rag publications. We all know they are out there.

Please don't post them here and try to make others defend them. That's just stirring the pot. I'd like to keep this thread open through the funeral.

There have been plenty of disrespectful and crappy comments about Harry and Meghan scattered through out this entire thread but that's ok?

I am glad there are a few days between the procession and the funeral. The entire family looks exhausted and like they could use a little time out of the public eye to rest. You can almost see it as a physical weight they are carrying as they walk the procession.
I can’t imagine having had to immediately make that tour of public appearances, beginning the day after her death. I would have been totally numb and running on auto-pilot.
I’m not sure if wearing a seatbelt would have saved her life.
Having not been chauffeured by a drunk driver probably would have, though.

That is probably what they do as well.
But even when they have heard a similar speech by hundreds of people before in the past few days, they have to stay focused.

Tomorrow Charles is going to Wales, it isn't mentioned, but I wonder if William and Kate will join them.

It is good to see how well the tabloid control themselves. Not just when it is about Andrew or Harry and Meghan, but also Charles and Camilla's self-proclaimed love child in Australia is not or hardly mentioned.

A long walk indeed.
It looks like it's been partly cloudy with moderate temperature today in London.
That is somewhat helpful for the folks waiting patiently in line.

With the rule that spots in line can not be held and that you can’t have part of your group join the queue later, what are they doing about people needing bathroom facilities? I can’t imagine being in line as long as these people are and not needing the facilities at least once or twice before they arrive at Westminster.

From what I understand, you can get out to go to the restroom (there are portajohns throughout the parks and you can go in and get back in line when you come out) but you can't get out and go off to see some sights, catch a movie, have a meal, or whatever and expect to get back in with your group. People are packing backpacks full of food so they won't have to leave the line. They also aren't allowing the guy who gets off work today to jump in and hold spots for friends who don't get off until late tonight, for example.

The nice thing is that they have stewards at the head of the queue who are collecting any unopened food or drink (since it can't be carried into the hall) and taking it to food pantries.

I read an article yesterday that was good, I wish I could find it again so I could post it. I’m not going to quote anyone, but simply respond to what was posted earlier.

It said, essentially, that even though Harry has withdrawn from his working royal life, as the son of the King, he is still a senior royal, and that when at a formal ceremony such as the one yesterday, the royals are ’working’. As such, there are protocols that are supposed to be followed, and people there take these formalities seriously, as we’ve all seen on full display this past week.

When not working, and on more leisurely or informal outings (like polo matches and vacations), they may be seen with some PDAs.

Zara Phillips is neither a senior nor a working royal.

And although Twitter responses may often be from bots (robots with artificial intelligence), there were enough comments everywhere from the people of the UK seemingly upset about this that it made me wonder, but I eventually got my answer (as stated above). Those of us outside of the UK may not always understand these things, but we try…

Personally, as a fan of Diana and her boys, I was glad that Harry felt the comfort of his wife with him during what must’ve been a really difficult day for both of them. As I said before, I am a hand holder myself.

I think we should be able to discuss these types of things as long as responses are delivered respectfully. To me it’s no different than discussing the crown or the casket. Protocols, formalities, traditions, etc. And very captivating, indeed!

Both Harry and Andrew are allowed to wear their uniform for the next vigil.

There will be 2, one for the children of the Queen and on for the grand children.

It's nice that the children and grand children will have a vigil.

As no longer working royals, both Harry and Andrew are not invited to the State dinner Sunday evening.
This dinner will include working royals and is hosted by King Charles for visiting dignitaries.
