Question of the day: 5/1: What's your food/cuisine of choice? Do you prefer certain kind of food? Italian? Mexican? American? Chinese?

I LOVE mexican food. I'm hispanic so its the food I grew up eating, its our comfort food. Most nights we have a mexican dish, when I visit people out of state, they always want me to make them something mexican. We don't go to sit down mexican restaurants because they usually aren't real authentic for us. We like the little hole in the places for take out. Hubby has adapted and loves it too....I tell him he's wanna be mexican now.
Hubby was in Italy last year for work so I went out to visit him for 3 weeks....it was amazing but we really missed mexican food while we were there. :lmao:

Japanese cuisine, hands down.

There's sushi, sure, but there's also:
Yakitori (chicken skewers, often made with chicken thighs)
Ramen
Gyudon
Miso soup
Salted fish
Onigiri (rice balls)
Katsudon

While many are familiar with crazy sushi rolls, the beauty of traditional Japanese cuisine is its simplicity. I love the flavors, love making these dishes. Would eat that way all the time if I could.

I'd love to take a trip to Maine just to go to the Maine Diner for their lobster pie. The last time I had it, I was 7 months pregnant with Josh, and about an hour later, he was doing somersaults in my belly. I love to tell him about that because he doesn't believe me ;)

Love the Maine Diner- often stop there for clam chowder on my way home from visiting my sister! Also a PS to @apirateslifeforme I get vertigo, too, often very suddenly with no warning. Find Bonine works better than Dramamine, and also a good decongestant helps. The doc thinks that mine is triggered by sudden fluid changes in my head/ears which can happen by looking up, looking down, etc., so the decongestant works on clearing out the fluid (even though I'm not stuffed up). That's the theory, at least.

Favorite cuisine- SO HARD to choose! It used to be Thai, but I struggle with even the mildly spicy dishes now, so have to be careful. Pad See Ew is my favorite, though. Love Chinese, from cheap and schlocky to fine cuisine in SF's Chinatown, and Dim Sum is fun. I'm an adventurous eater so don't mind going to authentic places; usually we are the only English-speaking patrons at our favorite Dim Sum House. I also LOVE Indian food- not too hot-spicy, but very happy with very flavorful-spicy. There's also Mexican, true Mexican cuisine, not just Tex-Mex (which I also love)... and Cuban cuisine!!! Oh jeez... Don't make me choose, I love them all!

I'm not really craving anything right now but I love cooking. I've never made homemade pasta but would like to try now that I'll have some more time. I'm also wanting to try to make new things outside of my comfort zone like bread of things with yeast. I've never used yeast and really want to work on expanding my knowledge.
I enjoy cooking and exploring different cuisines. Hard to pick favorites since there are so many options and I'm fortunate because living where I do lets me eat foods from around the world.
I'm comfortable cooking various types of Italian, French, and Chinese regional cooking and can do some dishes w/o reading recipes since I know many of the techniques by heart. This evening it was Asian cookery; sometime this weekend, Caribbean food which I've eaten all my life.
I like to eat Japanese and fried seafood in restaurants because I dont know how to cook one type much and the other needs a more powerful exhaust system than I have.

Thank you :goodvibes I will look for Bonine - for now the Dramamine is working, but I'm sure at some point I will build up an immunity to it. That's what happened with my allergy pills; I took Claritin for years, but last year I noticed I no longer got relief, so I switched to Zyrtec. I have raging allergies from October to June, so I'm always taking something. I've had problems with my ears for a while, too, so I'm not surprised that the vertigo is getting worse.

I sometimes wonder if it's due to air pressure changes with weather as well...yesterday it was warm, humid, and rainy. I've noticed that it coincides with rainy days. When the weather if off, I actually feel like there's huge weight pressing on my head and I get a lot of headaches. With the warm weather coming, I will be feeling better soon - I've noticed that my allergies aren't too bad in the summer when it's warm and humid (and when we go to Florida in February - I get a week of relief in the winter!).

Wish it wouldn't happen at all. It's such an awful feeling...the last time I had it, before I got the Dramamine, I spent the whole day in bed praying to "make it stop." My mum had to pick Josh up from school and take him to his gymnastics class; I absolutely could not function.

Sounds like the man has a twin brother! Fortunately for us there is no ban on multiple family members entering markets. When I send him to the store solo he almost always buys more than needed in an effort to get it just right. Need 1 mango? He'll buy 3 and maybe a papaya too because they look similar.
Yes, this! If I dont specify the exact size then I will get every single iteration that was available at the store that day.

Scented stickers? Dang those were the days....

At my infusion center there is a drawered cart they use for supplies to put in the lines. One the back there are three stickers that look like they should be scratch and sniffs. I feel I am entitled to some sort of award for not actually trying yet but it bugs me every time.

Some birthday month email offers. I was especially impressed by Denny's. As some of you may know, when you are signed up for their rewards, they send you a coupon for a free build your own grand slam during your birthday month. I do prefer IHOP. However, a friend who is dear works for a Denny's so I do go there every so often to see/support her. Anyway, Denny's sent me a coupon for a free stack of pancakes online plus assurance that once they do reopen, they will also send a free build your own grand slam that I will have a month to use. So kind!

That's nice of Denny's. My birthday was a few days ago and so many of the restaurant offers were not modified and were written as eat in. Moe's modified their offer. I cant recall if anyone else did. It isnt exactly a high priority but I like that some places were thinking ahead and did this.

My husband and I have the food debate all the time...if you could only eat one kind of food for the rest of your life, what would it be. For me it depends on if drinks are included. No drinks and I choose Italian, drinks and it swings over to Mexican for me. I'd miss pasta and pizza but I'd miss tequila and cervezas more. I think.

i just suck it up and take an allergy pill every day. On the days when I forget, I feel hungover. Head pounding, pressure in my face, nauseated. They make me sleepy about 5 hours after I take it, then about an hour later, I get a massive burst of energy (if I'm not careful, it'll keep me up all night), so I have to take them about 8am, get my nap in about 1pm, then I'm good until 11pm or midnight. Take the pills any later, and I'm sleeping at 7pm, and awake until 5am.

I used to use Zyrtec (Clariton never worked for me), and switched to the Walmart brand of it. Worked, just not as well. I have the BJs brand now; those are the ones that make me feel hungover, but work just as well as the brand name. I got 365 10mg tablets for what I paid for a month worth of Zyrtec.

*ETA: Clarifying: I take the pills every day because of the off and on pressure and vertigo that occurs when I don't take them, whether or not the things I'm allergic to are "in effect". I agree with Pirate...air pressure is one of the issues. I also have a massive fluid buildup in my head (apparently permanently) and I have no sense of balance.

Oh wow, I only get one? I'd have to go with French then, but I usually cook dishes from all over. Most of the cooking classes I've attended have been in the French style and cuisine given that most of them were conducted by a French chef who was giving classes in his French restaurant.

@bobbiwoz, I'm with you! I love seafood!

@apirateslifeforme I feel ya on this. When I get a bad spell I lie in bed and try not to move- and it can last for days. I have trouble orienting, can't even tell where in space my feet or hands are. When I need to use the bathroom, I crawl to the potty, keeping my spine and head parallel to the floor. It's awful. People who don't get serious vertigo don't understand this; they think it's just being dizzy. I also agree on atmospheric pressure and humidity having an effect on vertigo. I have preferred Bonine to Dramamine for motion sickness for a long time; imagine my surprise when the doc prescribed 25mg meclizine hydrochloride (which is what Bonine is)! Cheaper by prescription, easier/faster to get Bonine OTC. Good luck.

Monkey Dawn, I have printed out offers both birthday and otherwise that I am not able to use right now in the hope that when I can, they will be honored. I got yesterday $10 during May from Off Broadway Shoes. Their stores are all closed so not going there anytime soon for new sneakers. I also had $10 Super Cash from Old Navy which technically I could have used online but then their is shipping along with what happens if what you order does not work? I am not a clothes shopping big fan in general and prefer for sure in store! I hope there is something you will be able to use once it is safe to do so. Anyway, prayers again you did have a Happy Birthday :)

I'm a fellow vertigo sufferer...lol It sucks. Right now I have it moderately, nothing compared to when its bad but everytime I go to move right now, I feel like I just got off a spinny ride. Ugh, its awful. I'm going to try and take an allergy pill everyday, I usually only take them if I know I'll be outside for any period of time or when my allergies are already bothering me.

I am another who has had vertigo - to the point of being brought to the ER in an ambulance and having head CTs etc. Thankfully it hasn’t flared in a while. What broke it loose for me originally was Cyclone, the Coney Island rollercoaster that a couple of us mentioned a few pages back! I love it, but it’s so rickety that’s apparently it loosened some little tiny sand-like particles in my inner ear(s), causing fluid to get in there - hence the vertigo - and later massive double ear infections. It went on for several months and I was in quite a bit of distress between the vertigo and the head pain. I almost left my doctor over it as well. So I know it can be very debilitating! Meclizine never worked for me, but the decongestant helped. I know allergy season can cause a little bit of dizziness but thankfully not nearly as much as that first time! I would not want to go through that again.

Happy Saturday to you all. We've had pretty good day here today just being together.
The big news is colored my hair today! I ordered a kit from Madison Reed to color my hair. I really like it!
The videos and directions were really good and the hair color was ammonia and other harsh chemical free. In
the kit had barrier cream, wipes, gloves, the cream and color activator in a nice shake bottle, and color shampoo and conditioner.

Yes, Matt helped. Truth be told I'm not the most graceful and he kept telling me I wasn't doing it right after he had watched the video lol.
So he started putting the color on my scalp and I was rubbing it on the roots and pulling through to the ends. Overall I'm very happy with the color! I will do it again depending on how long this coloring last. I don't have great expectations of it but if it saves me some money I'll be very happy!

Dinner tonight was grilled burgers topped with green chiles, roasted brussel sprouts with garlic oil, and dry ranch potatoes.

Gratitude:

Good natured husband to help me color my hair and tell me he did good job lol
Homemade mixed berry cobbler tonight
Trying to have appreciation attitude about different pace of life and changing up the ways we do everything.
We are still blessed.

Peace and good health to all.

Question of the day: 5/2: What's a comfort meal?

What is something you cook, buy or make when you want comfort? Reminds you of home or positive time in your life?

I like to bake biscuits when I want comfort to remind me of my Granny. If I'm missing my mom I made some kind cream crap casserole. My mom wasn't around much nor did she cook the best but if it could be made with cream soup and cheese she was there. I make a "healthier" version of dorito casserole when I want to feel her close.

First,,Tina I am glad you got Matt to help you color your hair, doesn't it make you feel better? I did mine last week, and the first thing I am going to do when this is all over is go and get a haircut. My hair is halfway down my back, hasn't been that long since High School ( and that was decades ago, lol)

Comfort food. My all time comfort food is good old home made mashed potatoes. I only use a pressure cooker for them, as did my Mother and my Great Grandmother. I sometimes make Mom's meatloaf recipe too, and that meal gives me a real feeling of what it was like when I was young. Curious, what is a 'cream crap casserole?' lol Not sure if there was a missed letter in yours, or if that's just what you called it!

Grateful today that we had a beautiful sunny 75 degree day, finally felt like Spring
Grateful that the grocery store wasn't packed with people, and that I got almost everything on my list
Grateful that we are another day closer to this all being over--hopefully!
