So, anybody watching NBC's new "Quantum Leap" series?

I was a HUGE fan of the original, so I checked it out, and it isn't bad.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

The best news is that it isn't a reboot - it's a continuation of the original series and references Sam Beckett and Al, and that Sam never made it home in the original series. There's a lot of speculation that Scott Bakula is going to show up at some point, indeed the plot seems to be pointing in that direction.

The pilot episode that aired last week was, like most pilots, somewhere between OK and not too bad. It did the setup and introduced us to the characters.

Raymond Lee stars as Dr. Ben Song, who like Sam steps into the quantum accelerator prematurely and vanishes. His "Al" is his fiancee Addison Augustine, played by Caitlin Bassett. Ernie Hudson is on board as a military scientist (I think) and Mason Alexander Park plays Ian, a technical whiz who oversees the Ziggy computer that will hopefully guide Ben home.

The pilot episode was dated July 13, 1985 - which as anybody who lived through or loves the 1980s knows is the day Live Aid happened. The event is referenced in the plot, although for some reason it doesn't factor in any part of the actual proceedings which makes me wonder why they picked that date. Also, the plot includes a black tie dinner being held in Philadelphia on the same night Live Aid was happening - which I honestly don't think would have happened since it was a HUGE event and having another event the same night would not be a good idea.

The casting is OK. Lee is appealing and earnest as Ben, just like Scott Bakula was as Sam, although it's too early to tell if the same 'corn-fed Boy Scout wholesomeness' that made Sam so endearing is going to be echoed in Ben who seems more of a city guy.

And of course nobody could top Dean Stockwell's antic, bawdy Al so the writers didn't even try, making Addison a fairly straight-arrow character who dresses conservatively and has a very practical, no-nonsense demeanor. I get why they did this - nobody wanted to be compared to Stockwell and found wanting - but much of the fun of the original QL was watching the upright, do-the-right-thing-at-all-costs, 'averts his eyes when a lady raises her skirt to step over a puddle' Sam sparred with the often lecherous and hung-over Al. Their personality differences made for great viewing and a fast, believable friendship. Of course Addison and Ben are supposed to be in love with each other and they have chemistry, but he doesn't remember who she is and before he leaped their relationship didn't seem to have any deep flaws in it so beyond the normal bickering there isn't a lot of conflict. So are the writers going to be able to keep this team-up interesting? Only time will tell.

To be honest I thought the most interesting character was Ian, who dresses flamboyantly much like Al did and has an edgy, brittle nature. The actor has a very interesting look and personality, kind of a Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes in 1983 vibe.

Unlike the original series this one spends as much time in the lab as it does following Ben's adventures, which does kind of pull the focus; the original series was totally about Sam's journey whereas this one can't seem to decide whether it wants to be about Ben, or Addison, or the project. Of course, it's only the pilot so we'll see where it goes.

The show is on Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC.

I DVR’d the last episode of the original series that aired again not long ago. We watched the original series but somehow never saw the last episode. We just watched it a couple nights ago and I’m so glad to hear that the news series is a continuation. I look forward to Scott Bakula making an appearance. I’m bummed I missed the first new show but thanks for the heads-up.

I watched the first episode last night. I liked it. I thought Ben had some great lines and moments. I felt Addison was there too much but I get that they’re laying down the basics, who everyone is and what their roles are. I also think we’ll see Scott Bakula in the future and I love that they dedicated the first episode to Dean Stockwell. I’ll keep watching.

I
I need to watch this but dang, 10 pm on a weeknight?!

I know!!! That's pretty late for me too. Fortunately the episodes are on NBC's website and Peacock after it airs, so I'm planning on watching it tomorrow or whenever it shows up.

Watched the pilot. I'm so glad it isn't a reboot. That's the main reason why I'm watching. Given that the executive producer is the same guy doing the NCIS with Scott, I'm hoping he makes an appearance this season.

I loved the original and didn't know there was a reboot. I need to watch this!

I managed to catch it last night. No spoilers, but there's more dovetailing back to the original series. :-)

I've been excited about this for a while. I missed the pilot, but I watched last night's episode. I really enjoyed it.

Saw an ad for this on the Dis, of all places, last week. I'm glad to hear it's a continual story from the original. I'm sure the visuals will at least be better. It seems par for the course now for popular shows/movies to come back and the original actors with them, so I wouldn't be surprised if SB returned.

The first one was such a great show, I got so excited during episodes SUCH AS: the Halloween one with the evil Al, the evil leaper, Lee Harvey Oswald (lots of hype, not a lot of reward), and of course the final episode which seemed a little hacky on the writers' part.

I never saw the vampire one, I do recall seeing some Dracula-type guy in the waiting room at the end of an episode.

I loved the original series with Scott Bakula. We watched the new one last week, and I will give it a couple of weeks to see if it's something I want to continue with. I like the lead actor, but the lead actress, so far not so much. There are so many other new shows starting, as well as old ones returning, that I can't fit it all in.

Guess it was just me that didn't care for the pilot of the "continuation". Ben Song doesn't seem as charismatic as Sam Beckett, I mean I could very well be wrong and will give the show a couple of more chances but to me it was just meh.

Also Scott Bakula tweeted that he wasn't involved at all with this reboot so I doubt they will find him.

Watched some of it last night where he was an astronaut in space. I don't really recall the original series and this new version jumps back/forth too much making it hard to follow. I guess it would mean more and be easier to follow if you were fans of the original series.

Loved the original series, EP 1 of the new version is pretty good. I plan to continue watching. :)

I loved the original as a teen. I wasn't sold on a reboot but curiosity got the best of me. So glad it's a continuation and not a redo. I thought it has promise. I will tune in again.

Only saw the first episode so far. Overall I liked it. Enjoying the characters - like that they gave the lead a level of earnestness similar to Sam from the original. I don't really mind that the show has as much focus on the present as it does, just one part of that in particular ----

I am a little concerned as there seems to be this "overarching conspiracy" plot to it in the present - which kind of annoys me because it doesn't seem like any show today can help but have a giant conspiracy behind something going on. It feels like too many shows focus on this type of plot.

I also found a few moments where the show looked incredibly cheap. Lazy use of backlots and especially the green screen when driving in the car at one point would've looked better if I shot it on my phone.

But overall I think I will keep watching.

Also Scott Bakula tweeted that he wasn't involved at all with this reboot so I doubt they will find him.
After NCIS: New Orleans ended, Scott Bakula stated in an interview that he wanted to revisit Quantum Leap. I'd be shocked if he doesn't show up at some point.
