As jel0511 said, the member benefits are intended for members only. If you called DVC Member Services, said that you were renting points and asked what benefits you would receive, the CM was probably correct to end the phone call. Obviously the call should have been ended in a polite manner, but it should have ended nonetheless.
If you spoke to someone at CRO, then I doubt they had any idea what you were talking about.
Your room key will state "DVC Member" by virtue of the fact that the reservation was made through DVC. This may be adequate to get many of the discounts. Presenting the room key at a restaurant with a dining discount may be sufficient to get the DVC discount.
But DVC also issues member ID cards, which you obviously would not be able to present if asked.
Personally, I wouldn't walk around telling people that you are "renting" points as that often carries a somewhat negative connotation. If you ask a question by beginning with a statement that you are renting, you're that much more likely to have someone tell you that you are not eligible.
Personally, I wouldn't count on getting any of the discounts, and consider it a nice side benefit if a discount is granted.
