It makes me so D*** MAD when I see one ran over buy a car.C'mon people you can't spare 5seconds of your life to go around them?:confused3Much less pull over and move it to the grass?

No kidding. I saw 2 huge beautiful one the other day. Sure enough when I was coming back home 1 got smooshed. :sad1:

Ummmm.....I'm sure they don't hit it on PURPOSE. Sometimes you can't help it. No one wants to hit one because their shell can flatten your tire.

There are a lot of jerks out there who say, "I'm not swerving to avoid a ( you name it squirrel, bunny, racoon, etc etc." They're not stopping for turtles either.

I, however, stop for just about anything. And I get sad when I see stuff just hit and left in the road.

As for pulling over, there have been quite a few people in this area killed doing just that. No one is expecting to see a person bent over in the middle of the road. So, I'd be REAL careful pulling over.

We stopped once to move a turtle. DD jumped out and went to move it and it bit her. :lmao: Now I drive around them. :thumbsup2

I once ran over a turtle by accident. My friend, who was in the car with me, really let me have it. I hadn't seen it, and I felt awful about it. He just couldn't believe that I didn't see it - because he did. I felt bad enough about it - he just made it that much worse!

about 2 wks ago as we are driving along I see a turtle on the side of the road trying to cross back to the wetlands............
so I stopped, but I didn't get out, too much traffic, there was no one behind me at that point, but the cars started getting backed up soon after I stopped.........the poor turtle made it to the middle before people started swearing at me, honking their horns and going around me,
all the while I am leaned out pointing to the turtle, like sheesh, just let her get across!!
so we went where we were going and on the way back, I expected to see the turtle smooshed in the road, but she was not there, must have somehow made it the rest of the way across.
but I was just like this :confused3 as to why no one wanted to wait the 2 min it would have taken for the turtle to get the rest of the way across.

I have stopped twice in the last week to take turtles out of the road. My daughter tells me that most turtles that are hit are female because they travel to lay their young, while the males basically stay put.

They are not always traveling in the daylight.

We swerved to miss one this morning.Thankfullly there wasn't a car coming in the other direction.

and I am not getting out to move it along a busy road sorry turtle.

I always stop to pick them up and bring them to a safe place. I see them crossing my area often. Thankfully I haven't seen any smooshed.

I would probably hit a turtle if there was one in the road because I don't watch for that sort of thing... Then again I can't tell you the last time I saw a turtle... I think 2 years ago and that one was in a tank. In the wild... it would have been years ago.

Around here most of the small things stay out (and can move fast enough to get out) of cars way so unless your driving really fast at night you won't hit anything. The bigger things people try REALLY hard not to hit as they will total your car and possibly kill the driver (deer, moose, bear).

DH always makes fun of me because I stop the car, get out and move them to where I think they might be going! Half the time they just turn around and start walking back across the road again - I figured I tried!

I like turtles. Don't see too many of them in the roads around here, though.

Squirrels on the other hand...I swear I try not to hit them, but it's like they throw themselves under my tires.

If no one was behind me or I could go around safely I would BUT I am not risking my family by trying to miss one last minute...a few yrs ago a women was killed in front of her kids when she stopped and tried to move a turtle and a car hit her.If its safe I will.

For the first time in my life I stopped for a turtle in the road the other day, of course it was daylight and a country road. I was the only car. I almost had a stroke.:scared1:..I didn't expect it to start hissing and jerking its arms/legs in & out of its shell....she/he was pi$$ed and I got scared! Placed it out of harms way, said have a nice life and drove off....would I do that again ?

I hate to see anything hit but especially turtles. There aren't enough of them. I always try to make an effort to get out and help them get across the road. I love turtles.

If there is another car anywhere near me, I won't swerve to miss an animal in the road. The safety of me, my passengers and the other car is more important to me than the animal. If I had the chance, I would stop to move a turtle (I did the other day), but if it wasn't safe, I wouldn't.
