Put on the breaks-turtle crossing

No kidding. I saw 2 huge beautiful one the other day. Sure enough when I was coming back home 1 got smooshed. :sad1:

If you didn't move them then why would you expect another person to move them?

I have stopped to pick a turtle up and move it to a safer spot... I even got one once and brought it to that cemetery that has a million turtles.... it was on a busy road... the only thing I don't like is that I get peed on most of the time lol

I won't stop on a major highway to move a turtle-way to much risk involved. But on the backroads I will.

The best way to pick up a turtle is to grab it in the middle of its shell. The smaller the worst, there claws can get you and they do and will bite. The bigger ones are alot easier to handle.

Remember they are docile reptile and they are only trying to protect themselves from potiential harm, and they don't know what the harm is.

I am so glad that alot of people have a love of one of god's great creature's.Please pass the word around!!:thumbsup2

Snapping turtles aren't docile! We stopped and moved a small one out of the road once and that thing tried to get at my hand the whole time.

I love it when I see someone helping a turtle or any such small animal. It's nice. :)

Like I said, the smaller the harder to move.I will do a foot schuffle to get the smaller ones off the road!!!

It does not hurt them at all.

By the way all turtles are biters. Its all on the way you handle them.

I don't think I have ever seen a turtle on the road in this area.

Me either.

Chicago and Southern, Ca. The places to move if you never want to hit, move, or swerve to avoid a turtle. :snail: <- the only one I could fine, Turtley.

Count me in as one who has never seen a turtle crossing the road...I don't think I've ever seen a turtle in the wild, ever.

Around here the animals you see in the road (or on the side) are mostly deer/elk, skunks, raccoons, possums, squirrels and mice - and on the other side of the state, a lot of nutria. I have seen a couple fox, a few rabbits, one beaver and one porcupine, also.

If it is safe at the time, I will always get out to move an animal along...or make my dh do it. LOL We live by a pond, so it is really "turtle-y" where we live. A mama turtle came and lay her eggs in our front yard. I love turtles. :lovestruc

I did hit a porcupine once. :scared1: So sad. It was very dark and I did not see him until it was too late. I was so shaken I kept going, then I turned around and saw him going crawling into the woods. I'm sure he died. I was so sad. :guilty:

I've never seen a turtle in the road. I did stop once and move a tarantula that was sunning itself on a road on Ft. Huachuca.

I wouldn't ever stop on a busy street, and I wouldn't swerve last minute because I wouldn't want to take the risk that someone was in another lane or coming towards me. (I'd rather run over an animal than risk the lives of people on the road).

I will avoid animals in the road if I can but not at the risk of my safety. I know a lady who at the time was 7 months pregnant when her mother swerved to avoid hitting a dog, when she did she lost control of her car. They were both wearing their seat belts and survived but the daughter broke her pelvis, collarbone, and the baby died. This was on an empty road but swerving at the last minute is dangerous. My dad also ran his car into a ditch trying not to hit an animal,he was okay car was not. SO being an animal lover if it is safe I will avoid, but I love myself and family more, so I will not put us at risk.

When I was a State Trooper, I once stopped 4 lanes of traffic and hustled a turtle across a highway....Never even got a thank you from him:lmao::lmao:

Squirrels....well, uh...sometimes they make their own trouble.

Deer--oh man, don't wanna' go there...:headache:

Or the people you stopped to do a great deed!!:thumbsup2

I try to avoid hitting anything in the road but sometimes I do wonder if the squirrels in our neighborhood are suicidal... They seem to ONLY run into the street if a car is coming. I haven't hit one yet, but it is just a matter of time. I'm not being cruel, but really they are fast and apparently not too bright, or have a death wish.

We also frequently have dead frogs in the road. I have never seen a frog in the road, except for the flattened roads. This leads me to believe that they are difficult to see.

I don't think that most people are trying to hit things, but there are times when you just can't endanger the PEOPLE to save an animal. My friend was in a accident caused by a lady who swerved to avoid a rabbit. Fortunately, nobody was seriously hurt.

Saved a turtle from the middle of the road yesterday. Almost got hit by the idiot who didn't even think to slow when he saw me parked in the middle of the street with my hazards on.

.

If it were a trantula all bets are off and good luck getting across that street. :scared1:

Yeah, can't say I've ever seen a turtle crossing. I've seen ducks/geese crossing major highways with their babies. My mom saw them, um, not make it. She was traumatized.

I wouldn't hit any animal on purpose, but I'm not going to put my family at risk. Even if you can control your own car, you run the risk of another car slamming into you. As far others no wanting to wait goes, they might actually be more worried about getting slammed into. 10 years ago I was rearended while slowing down(not even stopping or swerving) for a dog. My two babies were in the back seat. The medics said the carseats saved them(hard impact). Love animals, love my family more!

I stopped on my sisters gravel road to move a turtle last week. I never knew a turtle could hiss like that.:scared1: Then Friday, I almost stepped on a tiny baby turtle on a path in the woods. He seemed like he was hurt, so I decided to bring him home. Of course, when I got to my house, he started flailing and showed me he was just fine. Had to take him back where I found him.:goodvibes

Squirrels are definitely a problem in my area. I call them kamikaze squirrels;) They either run across in front of you, then stop and double back just as you get to them OR they stop in the middle of the road right in front of you like they want to play chicken. I can just picture their little friends hiding in the bushes, giggling when people stop and curse at them, LOL. Maybe it is a squirrel gang inititation? All I know is it drives me CRAZY!:headache:

If there is another car anywhere near me, I won't swerve to miss an animal in the road. The safety of me, my passengers and the other car is more important to me than the animal. If I had the chance, I would stop to move a turtle (I did the other day), but if it wasn't safe, I wouldn't.

We were always taught to NEVER swerve to avoid an animal (not that you sometimes don't do it automatically) but it is MUCH worse to swerve to avoid the animal and end up hitting a car head on or a tree, etc... Then again, we don't have turtles and deer would be big one to be worried about here. The smaller critters either move fast enough or decide at the last minute to run right back toward your car. Oh, I forgot, you do get the occassionally flock of geese that decide to cross.
