purpose of the dog run

I don't understand why there are so many people (not meaning here but just people in general) that have problems with dogs. It's the dog OWNERS who aren't cleaning up after them or leave them alone to bark all day. I would rather camp with dogs than with some of the kids I've been around :rolleyes1

Ain't that the truth! People need to be responsible.

We don't have any dog parks in our area. I have seen them in other areas and heard about them. I think I am to much of a worry-wort to let our dogs play in one. I am scared another dog might try and hurt them or somehow a dummy would leave the gate open and they would run off. You just never know. Things can happen so quick.

Maybe they could turn the dog run into a off road trail for golf carts. Would be alot more fun for me.

I'll start off by saying that we take our dog to the Fort every year.

I have seen the dog park and did not think too much of it. Granted, only the fence was up. But I can't see us using it.

I think they are going to run into more dog problems than ever with this thing. I liked the old policy of keeping dogs in the pet loops or on the designated pet walks. Just my opinion but now that dogs will have "play dates" at the fort there will be a side effect of dogs not playing well together. There will also be a chance for people who don't like dogs to be forced with a sidewalk interaction of an approaching dog and owner on their way to the walk. Also, they put this thing right next to a playground and a volleyball court...now what a lot of dogs do when they see kids playing but can't play with them???? That's right, they bark and get upset.

It seems like they are opening a can of worms. I for one wish they'd put the money into something else that everyone at the Fort would have enjoyed...like fixing the old swamp trail!

My wife and I wish they would fix the swamp trail it was closed in 99 I think it was. We walked it back in 98 on our honeymoon and loved it. That is one thing about the fort I wish was still being used and taken care of. That and teh fact that our family are not dog owners or dog lovers a dog is the last pet in the world we would ever own. So for us to take the kids to the playground and have to listen to dogs barking and carying on is just not enjoyable kinda like people having to listen to some children it just isn't enjoyable to them.

Personally, I think Disney is asking for trouble with the dog park. Considering how some dog owners clean up after their dogs on the pet loops, I foresee an area full of poop. I also am concerned about vaccinations - there is an increase in the number of pet owners, according to my vet, who are concerned about the potential health risks to their dogs with vaccination, so they are "skipping" it. Now Disney doesn't ask for proof of vaccination at check in for the campground, and if you don't use the kennels there is no way of knowing if a dog is vaccinated or not. I would not want to risk myself, my family or my dog in an area playing with an unvaccinated animal. Mickey the Wonder Beagle will continue to stay on the pet loop, walking in the designated area for pets, on a leash, or kenneled during the day, and I will be following him around with the poop bag cleaning up after him. He is a good citizen and I want to keep him that way.

Here's a thought. Suppose you were an alien looking through your radiotelescope at the earth and could zoom in on a neighborhood. You see these two legged creatures go out early in the morning in their robes following a four legged creature around the yard with a bag waiting for him to poop and then the two legged creature picks up the poop in a bag and goes in the house. Later, the two legged creature leaves the four legged one in the house sleeping by the fire while the two legged one goes to a mindless job and works all day. Later, the two legged one comes home, takes out the 4 legged one again this time on a walk, once again with the poop bag. The 4 legged one poops, the two legged one cleans it up, then follows the 4 legged one home. Who would you think runs the country?

Well, lets see how long it takes for one irresponsible dog owner to ruin someones vacation by having their dog attack another dog or person by allowing them off the leash. I personally dont like the idea of having dogs outside of the pet loops, and I dont think my son who was seriously disfigured by a dog will either. We have dogs (a golden retriever and Labrador retriever) and they are considered family members. but I cant say im excited about the location of the Dog Park. I just wish they would have upgraded the swimming area like all the other resorts. I mean a waterslide and hot tub should rate higher than a dog park.

I have a dog and bring her to FW, but will not be using the park for most of the reasons stated already. Here at home, we recently had a big outbreak of disease among dogs that was later linked to a public dog park in town. We never used it, so no problem, but other dogs got really sick and some died. I also don't trust other owners (not the dogs, but the owners) to make sure their dogs are socialized and able to "play nice" off the leash. It's not worth it to me to endanger my dog or myself for a little off leash time.

The only place I will use the dog park is at a campground called Four Paws Kingdom in NC. It is a dedicated dog campground and the owners take the dog thing very, very seriously. They will not allow certain breeds or their mixes for safety reasons, and any dog found to be aggressive (and their owner) will be asked to leave. They have cameras in the dog park and are often there themselves, making sure everyone is getting along, no fighting and poop picked up. If you don't pick up the poop, they will send you packing. If your dog fights with other dogs or people, you're out. They also require proof of vaccination, so the disease risk is cut.

One day the owner of Four Paws was explaining their liability insurance to me and it was unreal the amount of things they had to pay to have covered (pretty much if you can think of it, they had to have a policy) and the insurance was partially responsible for the breed restrictions. I know it has to cost them a fortune and I just wonder if Disney has really given this enough thought.

Heck ya a golf cart mud trail :cool1: my cart loves mud :yay:

Mine to. Except when I got it stuck in the creek behind my house. I should have went with the mud tires instead of the A/T. But still fun.

OK, I understand that everyone is not a dog lover...that's OK. Experienced dog owners know about dog parks. It's their responsibility to handle their dogs in a park. If there is a problem then that's their business to handle privately. NOW, regarding the dog poop. It's highly unfortunate that some folks don't pick up after their pets. Personally, I wouldn't think about not picking up the poop, as most pet owners. Heck, they even offer free bags.

Think about this...one of my neighbors told me that he thought Disney was cleaning out the loops because of the rattlesnakes. Yes, snakes. According to him, they had found a nest of them behind one of the bathrooms. This could be heresay but it is Florida. Which would you rather step on, a pile of dog poop or a rattlesnake? The dogs are really doing us another service by forcing us to be on the look-out for dog poop and maybe seeing a snake before it is too late. Mans best friend comes to the rescue again. I'm thinking being in the dog loops is much safer because the dogs can detect the snakes before you. Also, surely the snakes can smell the dogs and maybe stay away? Food for thought.

Rattlesnakes...in FL???? Is that native territory for rattlers?

Hey steping on a little dog poop never hurt anyone... now steping on a rattler is another story. :scared:

I would think that not wanting to step in dog crap wouldn't make one's dog lover status be taken away, but then again there are not very many reasonable pet owner's left in the world.:confused3 After all, they do put clothes on them now(maybe we should put clothes on the orphans in Africa?) and take them everywhere they go(I don't know what Fido did all those years ago when he had to stay home all day!) I guess he dug under the fence and pooped in the neighbors yard just to pass the time because he was SOOO BORED!:rotfl2:
BTW- I have 3 dogs, 2 cats and 1 horse. I don't think that my animals are scarred for life when we leave them for a week. If they are they sure don't say anything about it!:rotfl: Don't think that I am being insensitive, this is just my opinion. I understand the love and affection animals give but people have no common sense anymore!

I choose to leave my pets at home when I vacation and don't care to be around yours or their poop! And no I did not see but a hand full of people at WDW last week being responsible pet owners. People don't care about the rules that Disney has and unfortunately Disney is not too keen on enforcing them. Pet loops are for pets and non pet loops are for NON pets! That means NO ANIMALS! Don't walk through loop 1400(non-pet loop), past the campers with dogs in them:laughing: and let your precious little Precious poop on my neat freak neighbor's campsite while he is gone to the parks! Oh I forgot, rules are for losers!

It is just too bad that some people think more about their pets than they do their own kind. That is just another sign of what is wrong with the world today!

I sense an air of hostility in the room. Breath deeply, hold it, let it out slowly.

Greetings "The Flame." Man, you sound fired up! Not wanting to be around dogs is OK. I bet your dogs and cats are outside pets. Most folks that bring their pets with them have "indoor" dogs. My Boston Terriers aren't bred to stay outdoors, but that's OK also. Yes, we do put a coat on them when it is cold because they don't have any hair to speak of. My post was "tongue in cheek" regarding stepping on dog poop vs. stepping on a snake, and yes Florida is full of snakes, and I would bet there are a lot of them in the woods surrounding FW. How did we get around to orphans in Africa? Are you concerned about orphans? If so, you might consider sponsoring one or two. Hang in there.....

Nope, not hostile, just stating my God given right of my opinion while I still have it:yay: . I am just a little sick of people with pets thinking that they do not have to follow rules. I happen to like pets, just not some of their owners. Some people, not all have lost respect for rules and have no concern for others. It just makes sense. If I left my animal at home, why would I want to be around someone else's or their poop? (not the owner's poop, the dog's....:rotfl: ).

Alas, I was told last week by cm Dora, after we called to complain about the barking dogs in the camper across from us(in the 1400 loop), that FW will make all loops pet loops eventually. I don't know if that is true since you get can't get the same answer to anything 2x in a row in all of WDW! Sorry, I guess that really lit a fire in my bonnet, so I am now getting it out of my system. Boy, it sure feels good!:cool1:

lynndiwagon-no hard feelings, lets just not make fun of those less fortunate than us and our dogs...I suppose my version of "tongue in cheek". My cat is inside and the rest are outside. You could board yours? But, I guess I am now stepping (so to speak) in your business.

Ft. Wilderness Guy-I am sure your the concerns with the Dog play pen are not without merit. If people think that it is okay to have a pet in a non pet loop, take a pet to a loop that they don't belong in, walk their pet where they shouldn't, drive with their pet on the golf cart and break all of Disney's rules and the rules of common courtesy, then to heck with common sense in the play pen! Let the good times rolllllllllllllll!:rotfl:

Now, let me check my shoe before I take that deep breath........

Wow, this is getting GOOD.

Are cats allowed to play in the dog run?

If someone were to bring their pot-bellied pig.....is the dog run open to them?

What if a dog is just too lazy to actually run...could he just hang out in the rear corner of the pen and smoke camels and drink mad-dog20/20 while pointing and laughing at all the athletic dogs pointlessly running and wasting un-neccessary energy?

Is it OKAY for dogs or other animals to wear real fur coats? Ya know...since they ARE animals, wouldn't that excuse them from PETA abuse? Or would we still get to splash red paint all over them?

Are rattlesnakes native to FLORIDA? Dont they have rights?
