Is this a place for them to run without a leash or is it strictly just to take care of business and socialize with other dogs? Anyone used it yet?

I don't know the "rules" of the dog run, but when we were at FtW 1/17 thru 1/20, it appeared that this is an off-leash park.

I don't know the rules either, but it does have a double gate so it must be a leash free area and now there is even a sign on a post on the bridge to the meadows trading post across from the 1500 loop bus stop that has an arrow and pointing to the "dog park".

Are they going to have a Referee to keep the dogs apart. We were at the Vets getting shots for our dog ( Disney trip) and a lady let her Chow break loose and he ran and attacked our dog and put a nice gash in his side. Needless to say she had to pay a large vet bill then and there as demanded by vet.

I can't wait to see if they even mention this place to me when I check in next month. I can say this, my kids are not use to being around alot of big dogs, so unless the dog park is empty or only has a few small pets in it...we may check it out, but we won't be using it. I want to keep my kids first trip back since they were puppies as unstressful as possiable.

I have never been to a dog park. I've wonderd what happens if the dogs get into a fight.
The last time we were there my dog was only loose when she was in the 5ver other then that she was on a leash. I'm curious as to how the dog run works. If your dog is left to run with the other dog are do they take turns. At this place we go camping with our horses they have a feild were you can let your horses loose but there is a 20 minute rule and others don't let there out with yours without checking.

I would think that if they haven't posted rules yet, they soon will. First times that people let dogs loose that havne't been socialized will change everything and Disney will verry soon find out about what a liability they have on their hands. Most dog parks require that your dog be socialized as to other dogs before you unleash your dogs. Also, it isn't anyhones private dog area because it is there for all to use. Going to be interesting to see how this one goes by summers end.

The ones using the dog lot while we were there were turning them off their leash to run around, but as we were leaving the non-pet loop 1400, yea right, it was being used to take care of business. I stood and watched to see if they would take the crap with them or just leave it. I was right, left it for the people at that campsite to find later on their shoe's. I thought what a nice surprise. Whatever rules they do post won't be followed and if they are it will be the only ones because none of the other ones are.

When I was there last week not many people were using it. (I guess a lot of people don't know about it yet) I only say one or two dogs in there at a time.

I did see one little dog go under the fence and run out towards to playground where I was playing with my kids. Owner was very upset and said she was going up to the settlement to tell somebody.

I'll start off by saying that we take our dog to the Fort every year.

I have seen the dog park and did not think too much of it. Granted, only the fence was up. But I can't see us using it.

I think they are going to run into more dog problems than ever with this thing. I liked the old policy of keeping dogs in the pet loops or on the designated pet walks. Just my opinion but now that dogs will have "play dates" at the fort there will be a side effect of dogs not playing well together. There will also be a chance for people who don't like dogs to be forced with a sidewalk interaction of an approaching dog and owner on their way to the walk. Also, they put this thing right next to a playground and a volleyball court...now what a lot of dogs do when they see kids playing but can't play with them???? That's right, they bark and get upset.

It seems like they are opening a can of worms. I for one wish they'd put the money into something else that everyone at the Fort would have enjoyed...like fixing the old swamp trail!

And all this time I thought they had put this dang thing up so BigDisneyDaddy would have a place to play. I just had to say that after he made the pork chop comment about me. In all seriousness, I agree with your comments. Unfortunately we don't vote on the rules. If FW was a public campground we might have a say but we never will so I just take what we can get. I only got to go on the Swamp Trail once when it was being torn out and it was really cool back there. Maybe when WDW starts getting $100 a night for those premium sites they'll give us some better ammenities like there used to be. Right now I'd be happy riding my bike down to Trails End or just looping. If it's as pretty there as it is here today that's where I wanna be. What would be neat is if they would just keep the trail clear where the wooden one was it could still be used when it's dry and everybody could still see it.

We have a dog park here and it's a great place to take the dogs. It is meant for well socialized, non agressive dogs. Your dog should come when called and be friendly with other people/dogs. You should also never bring a dog into a dog park that is in heat or is not up to date on their vaccines.

You start out on a long leash if there is another dog in there until they have sniffed each other properly and make sure they are ok with each other. Then you can let them off leash and they can play together. Don't bring your dog's toys unless you and the dog are willing to share them.

If another dog/owner comes up, they should keep their dog on a leash until making sure their dog is ok with the group. Personally, I keep my younger kids outside of the gate just in case some dogs start fighting. My older DD hangs out inside with me though.

Our dogs both love playing with our friends dogs. They come over and run around on our property. They've never had a problem with another dog, but I always introduce them slowly.

Dog parks are also great for people that like to play frisbee or catch with their dogs. You just may want to wait until you have it to yourself.

Although I have been referred to as "The big dog" I dont plan on utilizing the new park. :thumbsup2

That would be great if people would abide by these guidelines, but as we all know, there are always people who don't. There are no CM's monitoring this dog park, so it has the potential to be a free for all.

As I mentioned we did see a little dog escape from the pork run and go straight for the kids on the playground. Luckily this dog just wanted to play, but if it had been more aggressive things could have gone bad.

Stacktester,

I am paying $91 a night plus tax for my upcoming trip Valentine's weekend for a premium site. It's pretty darn close to $100 a night! But, if it helps any Disney doesn't even listen to their own CM's most of the time, so no matter how much we spend they won't listen to any of us either. I am afraid I have to agree that it's gonna take a major problem like a dog attacking another one or causing injury to another human for Disney to take notice that the dog park is gonna need a bit more than a fence (that sounds like it's to tall for the safety of my kids) and a few water fountains. I am still waiting on pins and needles to see if they even mention the dog park to me when I check in and then see what happens as I have to walk my kids to it.

My limit is the $71 a night we will be paying during 4th of July trip. We left December 21st and asked to stay one more night which fell into the holiday rate of $91. I asked the CM if there was any discount and she said no. So instead of letting us stay at the rate we were getting (the campground was empty) they let us leave and had pleny of empty sites that made no money. I guess at last those that have pets will feel like their $5 pet fee went to something. Not having a dog, it really doesn't bother me what happens over there. Not being rude but I just don't care.

It seem to me that there are more and more dog parks poppin up.It sounds like dog parks are becoming popular. We have a couple in Fort Walton which is close by, I have never been to one so I'm sure there are rules. Thanks for kinda letting me know how they work. I've been wanting to try one out.
Thanks
Cindy~

Sure thing Cindy. It's very much like a child's playground. The adults need to make sure the kids are playing nice, staying where they are supposed to, and obeying the rules. There are also going to be parents who don't watch their kids and someone gets hurt. Public playground or public dog park. You assume responsibility when you enter. You choose to take the risk and have to be aware that things can happen.

Most dog parks are free to the public, so there is no staff member to make sure everyone is following the rules. Is would not be feasible for FW to put a staff member there to keep watch. They should however post the rules so that people are aware of what is expected of them. And then it will be up to security to make sure the rules are followed...just like they check the underage golf cart drivers :rotfl:

I don't understand why there are so many people (not meaning here but just people in general) that have problems with dogs. It's the dog OWNERS who aren't cleaning up after them or leave them alone to bark all day. I would rather camp with dogs than with some of the kids I've been around :rolleyes1

Shannon you hit that on the nail! I hear you! I appreciate your comparison of the playground to the dog park! Good Points. Hope security does a good job with inforcing the rules! I would hate to hear of anyones dog getting hurtor child. I would like to have a place were I could let Maggie loose for just a few minutes. She is friendly but shes also Big! So we will need to look after the little ones! Mostly we should watch after all the dogs till we get to know each other:goodvibes .
Thanks
Cindy~

Stacktester,

I am not happy about paying the higher rate either, but I didn't have much of a choice as I wanted to get back there as soon as we could since we just got another camper for Christmas. I just happened to luck up on this upcoming res as a cancellation or I wouldn't even be going at all in the next two weeks. So, I guess I can't complain too much about the rate. And, it's cool about what you said about the dog park, I don't think it was rude. Everyone has an opinion and you'll find anyway that I don't take things offensively very often. :) I have very thick skin (I got it from working at Disney-LOL!) I don't think we'll be using the thing ourselves anyway, so I may be sharing your opinon in the future. ;)

"I asked the CM if there was any discount and she said no. So instead of letting us stay at the rate we were getting (the campground was empty) they let us leave and had pleny of empty sites that made no money." .....UGH! Some how this doesn't surprise me, but as a stock holder it tickes me off a bit. I have always said, some money is better than no money, especially if they were empty and did not have any upcoming reservations coming in. I swear sometimes I wonder why they do the things they do and then my head starts to hurt and I have to stop thinking about it. I definitly think you were right, they should have extended your stay one more night at that rate and the front desk could've done that for you.
