I find it icky as well.
I think a better way to do it would be to privately sign some kind of thing between the kid (male and female) and BOTH parents - sort of like they do for driving. also, make it clear that communication is open.
the whole ball, ring, father thing is icky and archaic.
bottom line: it is really about how they have been brought up all along and if you haven't instilled those values by that age then it is probably too late and this silly ritual is pointless anyway.
