Purchasing DVC directly from Disney vs. resale

My wife and I are very interested in purchasing a DVC membership. We really liked VWL but were blown away by BWV. We would mostlikely stay there over VWL. Would it be better to hold out for a resale at BWV or take a chance and buy at VWL and hope that we can get into BWV when we want to? There doesn't appear to be a big market for BWV resales.

Our home is BWV's and we LOVE it there too. IMHO you are smart to wait for BWV if that is your favorite. There are 95 pts avail. thru a timeshare resale if you want to look at it. www.reid4florida.com/Disney.htm Maybe this will help. Buy a resale!! I'm also a BWV owner and you *really* need the 11 month window at BWV. You certainly need it more than you do at any other DVC resort right now. And as BWV owners, right now getting OKW or WL at the 7 month window isn't very difficult. Contact a resale broker and with a little patience you'll have the contract that you need!! We went through Disney and wish we had gotten a resale because we probably would have saved money. BWV was available at the time through Disney and we really weren't too familiar with the DVC resale market.

I would definitely wait and buy a resale if you really prefer to stay at BWV for the majority of your time. The 11 month window is becoming increasingly important at BWV, much more so than any of the other DVC resorts actually. I would contact one of the many reputable resale brokers and tell them that you're interested in a BWV contract. Many here have had success in getting the BWV points that they wanted at a reasonable price. Good luck! Oh, and we love the BWV too!!

When you buy resale, can you buy only 95 points and stop there? Are you not required to purchase 150 points as if you were purchasing through Disney?

hi and welcome to the board: yes, your minimum initial contract must be for at least 150 points. bwv can be hard to get into-just checked the other day for the second week of november and all was booked for a 1br either view or a studio. this is at 9 months out. if you really prefer bwv over vwl, go for the resale. several people have worked with the timeshare store, our sponsors, with good results. other people have had luck with www.atimeshare.com the location is what made us fall in love with bwv.

Don't wait for a listing to show up on the timeshare web sites, Most sell before they get listed. We listed with Pat at The Timeshare and Jaki at A Timeshare Broker and were called within a week by both. Yes you can buy a smaller contract but it won't be much use because it will be hard to find another small one to add to it, IMHO. Don't be afraid to negotiate asking price. And make sure it includes some banked or leftover points.

The minimum purchase for DVC is suppose to be 150 point no matter where you purchase your interest.

We have heard mixed reports on this board about buying less than 150 points for your initial purchase on a resale. Most people have said they were asked if this was the initial purchase and were told that they must purchase at least 150 points. But there have been a few people who have indicated that they were allowed to purchase less.

I have been checking the inventory of both the timeshare store and atimeshare. There is not much inventory at this time. The inventory diminished significantly since Sept. 2000.

If you really are set on BWV call a broker and work with them. Your patience will pay off. I tend to agree with statements on this board it seems more difficult to book at BWV than any of the others. Good luck! I am sure you will find something.

You may also want to try through a search engine such as "yahoo" timeshares and then click on the many websites. There are some direct seller sites that have DVC points available. However, if you decide to place a bid, I would suggest you use an escrow service such as timeshare closing service to ensure your investment is protected and the title clears. I have a friend that sold his timeshare without a broker. Good luck!
