Purchasing a second contract at home resort.

We have a BCV contract with a Sep UY and we are looking at buying a smaller BCV contract to give us a bit more points. I know that it’s easiest to buy with the same UY, but is it annoying as it sounds to have two different UYs? The thought of waiting for a small BCV contract with the same Sep UY seems like it could be a very long process.

I would buy whichever use year comes up in the price point you want and points you want. Honestly - its fine to have more than one use year - You just end up borrowing a few points from one and banking a few from the other

How soon do you need the points? I think it definitely can be worth waiting for, but obviously not for too long.

I would not recommend a small contract in a different UY…it’s a whole new membership.

That means you can’t use the points with your Sept UY without a transfer which is limited to one per UY.

And, you don’t see them online until you book and can’t use during home resort without a call.

I’d wait for the Sept UY. Or go direct and pay more.

If buying resale contract I would wait at least a couple of months for the right size contract with your UY.

If buying direct.... I would call your guide today and see if you could get a contract today with a September UY. That way you get double points.

I would just buy direct if your looking for 50 points or less. The savings and difficultly of finding a 50 point contract in your UY isn't worth it.

I have two use years, but the second use year is only for BLT where everything else, resale and direct is in the first use year. That makes things easier to deal with.

Under no circumstances would I recommend buying a small contract in its own UY.

The difference between direct and resale at BCV seems a bit extreme to me. I'd probably wait a bit for the right resale contract.

It is except when you are talking 25 point or so and needing certain UY, it might be worth the difference.

What I wouldn’t advise is a second membership in a different UY for a small # of points

I understand your point about very small contracts but you'd still be paying nearly double in the case of BCV. This hurts, even for a small contract. Banking, borrowing and renting points occasionally in some years might be a cheaper option.

I have quite a few 25 point direct BCV points because I wanted small amount of more points at the time. :)
All same UY though, right?

This!

The difference might not be as bad as you think once you pay the fees for that small of a contract.

I’d agree with @Sandisw if 50 or less I’d wait till last minute which might be today (or end of Sept?) and buy direct and get the extra years worth of points.

If you pay $275 for 16 years, that's $17 per year (without fees). If you add the dues at $9 you end up at $26 per point per year. You'd be paying a lot of money for convenience.

Definitely better to wait for resale but I’d simply never advise buying a small contract in a different UY when the goal is to use with others points.

But if my goal was to use together then I’d buy direct or look for more points…except that means more dues.

So, I’d pay more upfront if I wanted a small contract in order and to use it with my other points if I didn’t want to wait for my UY to become available.

I’d also consider getting a point transfer and then having some of your own points you can “bank forward” while you wait for the right contract.

Can you define what you mean by “smaller contract” 25, 50, 100?

Wait for it , do not get a small contract in a different use year. Back when they looked the other way at transferring for same owner it was ok but now with the enforced limit it will suck- one schedule change and you could be stuck.

Factor in your closing costs vs dues for the extra points. For me it was worth it to buy a tiny extra contract because I knew I just needed enough to get the premium view. For most people 25 point contract is not worth it.Are you 100% sure that you would not use 100 points? Because that’s when you start getting cheaper per point cost on the resale market.

Agreed. It's not about having a contract on its own, that's not a problem, it's having a SMALL contract on its own is when you run into issues.

Having a small contract on its own means inevitably more transfers and you are much more likely to strand points than if it were with your other BCV contract.

For example, let's say you own 100 points at BCV in one use year and then you own a 25 point contract in another UY. The room you want costs 40 points a night and you're wanting 3 nights so 120 points.

You now either have to transfer 20 points over to the 100 pointer from the 25 point contract.

You could also borrow from the 15 points from the smaller contract to get up to the 40 needed for a night and then use 80 points to book 2 nights from the larger contract.

You could of course also borrow 20 from the larger contract to get to 120 but either way you're still borrowing.

Remember if you cancel, banking/borrowing and transfers are not reversible transactions. You must take a trip or rent out points for the UY you bank/borrow into. Compare this to if everything were in the same UY, everything would just return to the normal use year and no harm no foul assuming you cancelled before the holding deadline and weren't in the last few months of your use year. You wouldn't have to deal with transfers or calling member services to book your room or any of that.

Long story short, it's okay if the contract is large (IMO at least 100+ points) to have it on its own, but I would strongly advise against a small contract being by itself in a membership, especially when you already own points for that resort in another UY.

I’m a bit naive to mixing UYs and the problems within. What’s so bad about it? If you have, say 250 pts in a Feb UY and an additional 50 in a Sept UY at the same resort, the issue becomes not being able to use 300 pts together unless you book in overlapping window of September to the following February, unless you use up your one transfer per membership?
